Elder as a cultural reality is emerging. And, you're one of those who is making it happen.

That is why you are an Elder. Discernment is a state of consciousness that allows eqanimity and self-awareness.

Good article, Marc. Many people get confused about discernment, as if it is a mysterious quality. And to some extent it is mysterious because it involves both mental and physical actions. When I've lost my way in the past, it is often because I failed to discern whether information coming to me or from me was coming from love or fear. I had to learn to feel the difference in my body (physical) and decide (mental) the nature of the source.

Discernment as the secret sauce of the wisdom is so spot on. We don’t give it the attention it deserves.

Thank you Marc. Well said as always. "An Elder's intuition isn't some vague hunch; it's a finely tuned instrument built from decades of living, observing, failing, and reflecting". Who knew failures would end up being so precious?

Wonderful article Marc! One of the great advantages of elderhood is being able to observe while being IN a given situation, regulating emotions without suppressing them. I love your writing with some sentences in what I would call “sonata form:” exposition, development, recapitulation. Ain’t it great to have lived long enough to have gotten here?! (87 next month) Thanks for giving the teeth of my brain something to chew on this morning.
