Elders know breakdowns are the access to the future. Yes, breakdowns are the gateway, the entrance to the future.
Elders know that breakdowns open futures that couldn’t be accessed before. They expose what no longer works, what’s rotten, what’s unsustainable.
A breakdown occurs when:
· What used to work stops working. The old tools, the old strategies, the old identity stop producing results.
· Reality exposes something you’ve been avoiding. A truth you didn’t want to see, a cost you didn’t want to pay, a pattern you didn’t want to interrupt.
· A future is demanding to be born. And the present structure can’t support it.
That’s why Elders treat breakdowns differently.
Older people avoid them, resent them, or interpret them as signs of decline. Elders recognize breakdowns as the access point to creation—the doorway through which a new future becomes possible.
Elders don’t rush to patch it, soothe it, or pretend it’s not happening.
When breakdowns arrive uninvited, Elders use them. They read them the way a seasoned sailor reads a sudden shift in wind—not as a threat, but as a signal: Change course. Raise your spinnaker. Cleat the mainsail tight. A different future is now available.
While most people grip harder when life fractures, Elders loosen their hold; they know how to let go. They understand that something must fall apart for something wiser to come into existence. They’re not attached to preserving the old order—they’ve lived long enough to see that at least half the “old order” turned out to be fiction anyway.
And when breakdowns don’t arrive on their own? Elders create them.
More than just responding to breakdowns, Elders even cause breakdowns—consciously, not out of rebellion or drama, but to clear the ground. To interrupt the drift. To stop the momentum of a future nobody wants. They’re willing to take the heat now to create the opening that wasn’t there five minutes ago.
The Elder’s role is to stand at the edge of what is ending and midwife what wants to begin. To say, without panic, “Good. Now we can see what truth demands. Now we can build something that will have integrity and hold.”
Breakdowns don’t reduce an Elder. They reveal them. They give the Elder their courtyard—the chance to create a future that wasn’t available until the old one cracked and crumbled.
That’s why Elders don’t avoid breakdowns. They honor them as the doorway to a future only they are old enough, steady enough, and wise enough to walk through first.
That’s who Elders are: The living breakdown that gives rise to the world we actually want. And that is precisely what is needed and wanted today.
