Mirror, Mirror

Mirror, mirror on the wall,
who’s the Elder in the hall?
Not the one I’m posing as—
the polished act, the practiced jazz.

Mirror, mirror, tell me straight:
who’s the one who can’t relate
to the fact that time has called my bluff,
and all my stories aren’t enough?

You say, “I’m fine. I’m strong. I’m good.”
But the mirror sees what I withstood—
the grief, the fear, the quiet ache,
the roles I play, the fronts I make.

Mirror, mirror, drop the show.
Tell me what I need to know.
Not who I wish that I could be,
but who is actually here as me?

The Mind Makes a Terrible Mirror

Elders know the mind is not a reliable reporter, especially about who we really are. The mind is full of ego, identity, personality, psychology, philosophy, memory, and emotions, all “slip-sliding away,” trying to hold your story together.

And if you strip all that down to its basic operating skills, one skill always shows up: self-deception.

On the Elder path, you don’t get to hide behind that. You must get to know your most authentic self. If that self isn’t good enough for you, becoming an Elder is going to be rough. Elders get right with themselves. They drop their self-deception. Only then do they become someone who can actually shape the world around them.

Ask the World

To see what you can’t see, Elders take the outside view seriously. They bring in an objective third party—someone or something that reflects who they actually are, not who their mind says they are. Elders want the straight truth, not a flattering hallucination.

It’s simple:
Find out how the world experiences you.
Not your self-assessment. Not your narrative. The world’s.
How do you occur for others? What shows up in the space when you walk in? Their response is data. It matters.

And here’s the key to your data collection:
Look at the requests people make of you.
That’s where your real identity lives. People ask things of you because that’s who you are for them in the world—your presence, your impact, your role, whether you’ve claimed it or not.

What the world asks of you is the clearest mirror you’ll ever get.
