A One-Minute Elder
THE NOOSPHERE AND THE ELDER
The noosphere is a useful word for something we all live inside but rarely name.
The term was introduced by Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, who described the noosphere as the sphere of human thought, layered atop the biosphere, like the atmosphere wrapping the Earth.
Although most believe in an Ozone layer, the Noosphere is often more difficult to accept. I suggest you suspend your disbelief and, at least for this reading, suspend your skepticism.
In plain terms, the noosphere is the field of shared meaning we generate through language, stories, beliefs, assumptions, and conversations.
It isn’t abstract.
It’s totally operational.
Every time we speak, write, argue, post, teach, or repeat a narrative, and yes, what we think, we either add or displace energy from the noosphere. Over time, certain ideas become dominant—not because they are true, but because they are reinforced.
That reinforcement shapes how people think, what they perceive, what feels possible, and what actions seem reasonable or inevitable.
That’s how the noosphere impacts thinking and action. It sets the default context. It’s water to the fish, air to the bird, and the noosphere to human beings.
Most people believe they think independently. But ultimately, they think within the all-encompassing assumptions of the noosphere they inhabit.
In the noosphere today, aging is framed as decline, dependency, and irrelevance, causing fear-based decisions to follow—about health, work, worth, and death.
When speed, youth, and disruption are glorified in the noosphere, then wisdom, patience, and restraint are extinguished.
This is why Elders matter.
Elder conversations differ in quality from those abundant in the noosphere. Elder conversations are said at a conscious and appropriate time and place; more spacious, less reactive.
Elder conversations speak from lived consequences. They carry memories and stories forward. They are experiential, emotionally and ancestrally rooted. They ask questions that allow people to examine what is determining the quality, mood, and thinking about their lives, and more importantly, the future.
A substantial number of Elder conversations are now occurring, independently across the globe. Elder voices are now entering the noosphere from many countries, becoming more frequent and more numerous. According to ChatGPT, Elder conversations occur 10,000 to 50,000 time a week.
That’s the real work.
Not convincing.
Not persuading.
But altering the noosphere so wisdom can once again be heard, so that fundamental core values be illuminated, that peace, compassion and equanimity become available.
