IT’S GOING TO HIT THE FAN

Are Americans getting too old?

Some people think so. And that “some” is quickly becoming “many.”

A growing number of writers and commentators argue that older adults have accumulated too much wealth, influence, and power. They claim America’s future is increasingly being shaped by people looking backward rather than forward.

The argument goes something like this:

Older people are living longer.

They’re staying in leadership positions longer.

They’re holding onto their wealth longer.

And because there are so many more of them than ever before, they’re exerting an outsized influence on the direction of the country.

In short, America is becoming a gerontocracy, a society run by old people.

Well, that’s one way to look at it.

But I think something else is going on, and we Elders need to understand it.

People are certainly living longer. More than 9,000 Americans turn sixty-five every day. For the first time in human history, we have a massive population living into later life.

Before the culture starts blaming old people for everything from politics to the price of eggs, let’s take a closer look.

Because age is not the problem.

Wealth may be.

People over sixty-five hold about 45 percent of our nation’s wealth. Sounds alarming until you look closer. In 2019, 70% of that wealth (45%) was held by just 10% of seniors.

The issue isn’t old people.

The issue is people with wealth.

Your grandmother is probably not sitting on a mountain of cash, plotting the future of America from her recliner.

A relatively small group of wealthy people holds most of the wealth, and some of them are old.

But here’s the real issue.

Whenever large disparities exist, people look for someone to blame.

That’s true with race.

It’s true with religion.

And in this case, it’s especially true with age.

The wider the gap between the haves and the have-nots, the easier it becomes to create an enemy.

Old versus young.

Boomers versus Millennials.

Retirees versus workers.

The real issue may be disparity, but age becomes the visible target of frustration. That’s how ageism will grow.

SO, WHAT CAN ELDERS DO ABOUT IT?

First, stop defending age and start embodying wisdom.

The younger generations are not impressed that we have managed to stay alive for seventy-five or eighty years.

Longevity is an accomplishment of biology and ecology.

Elderhood is an accomplishment of development.

For the first time in human history, millions of people are living long enough to become Elders.

Not older.

Elders.

People who can think beyond their own interests.

People who can see beyond the next election, the next quarter, or the next social media outrage.

People who understand that every generation inherits the future from the generation before it.

A wealthy older person asks, “How do I keep what I have?”

An Elder asks, “What am I responsible for passing forward?”

This is where Elders can lead.

Not by holding onto power.

Not by occupying positions forever.

Not by insisting they know better.

But by becoming bridge-builders between generations.

Mentors instead of gatekeepers.

Stewards instead of owners.

Contributors instead of competitors.

The future doesn’t need old people running everything.

Nor does it need young people to run everything.

The future needs wisdom at the table.

So to my fellow Elder teachers, leaders, and practitioners: we have work to do.

The alarm is ringing. Time to get up and get to work. The opportunity is sitting right in front of us.

Let’s not waste it.

THE NOW UNSTOPPABLE ELDER MOVEMENT

A movement becomes unstoppable when it reaches a tipping point—when enough people, organizations, conversations, and shared purpose converge that the movement no longer depends on any one individual. It begins carrying itself.

I believe the Elder Movement has crossed that threshold.

The Godfathers, Zalman, Ron, and Chip, have become emeritus. The trail has been blazed. Many footsteps have now made the ragged trail into a well-trodden path.

The tracks of pioneers have become the Camino del Anciano, the path of the Elder, now traversed by many “pilgrims.” A pilgrim being someone who undertakes a journey—not merely to reach a destination, but to be transformed by the journey itself.

For decades, scattered voices around the world have been quietly asking a different question:

What does it mean to become an Elder, not simply grow old?

Those voices were once isolated.

Today, they are becoming a chorus.

Thousands of organizations, conferences, podcasts, books, workshops, retreats, research projects, and online communities are exploring conscious aging, Eldering, Sage-ing, wisdom, purpose, legacy, spirituality, intergenerational leadership, and the unique contribution older adults can make to humanity.

Each effort may appear independent.

They are not.

They are expressions of something much larger emerging beneath the surface.

History reminds us that every significant shift begins this way. Individual sparks appear unrelated until, suddenly, they reveal themselves to be part of the same fire.

The Elder Movement is no longer just about extending lifespan and improving physical and mental healthspan.

It has also become about expanding and extending wisdom. Wisdom, a powerful element missing in our world.

No previous generation has had this opportunity.

The Elder movement is about bringing wisdom much more fully into the world.

Never before have so many human beings lived long enough, remained healthy enough, and possessed enough accumulated experience to consciously become Elders.

This is entirely new territory for humanity.

The question is no longer whether we will have millions of older people.

That demographic reality is already there.

The question is whether millions of these older people will simply age...

...or become Elders. The Elder model for growing old is now available and well tested.

An Elder is not defined by wrinkles, retirement, or years lived.

An Elder is recognized by presence.

Presence is the quiet power of an Elder’s way of being, changing the people and environment around them before a single word is spoken.

They steady the environment.

They think beyond themselves.

They calm conflict rather than fuel it.

They bring perspective where others bring reaction.

They carry wisdom earned through living.

Perhaps most exciting is that no one owns this movement.

There is no headquarters.

No central authority.

No single organization.

And me, I am just one of many on the Camino.

Modern Elder Academy. Sage-ing International. Contemporary Elder Institute. Center for Conscious Eldering. Elders Action Network. Hundreds—perhaps thousands—of other organizations around the globe are each contributing different pieces of this same emerging future.

Together, they are creating something none could create alone.

Humanity has spent centuries developing knowledge.

The last century developed technology.

Perhaps this century will be known as the one in which humanity finally develops wisdom.

That is why I believe the Elder Movement is now unstoppable.

Not because it has become large enough.

But because it has become necessary.

The world has no shortage of information.

It has no shortage of intelligence.

It has no shortage of power.

It has no shortage of wealth.

Check the current field you’re living into. The existing field has a lot to do with how you feel about yourself and about life.

What the field lacks, and desperately needs, is wisdom.

And that is precisely what Elders are here to bring.

The movement is already underway.

People don’t hear wisdom because it is spoken. They hear it because something within them already knows it is true.

Our growing readership demonstrates this “knowing.” It hits home at this time of their lives.

Not because millions grew older.

ELDER, FROM POSSIBILITY TO PROBABILITY

A possibility is something that can happen.
A probability is something that is likely to happen.

A possibility exists in imagination, vision, concept, or declaration.
A probability exists in structure, momentum, evidence, and action.

A possibility says:

“This could exist.”

A probability says:

“Given the current circumstances, this will likely occur.”

That distinction matters enormously.

Most people die with possibilities.
Very few build probabilities.

Here’s the deeper part:

A possibility does not require proof.
A probability does.

A possibility can appear instantly.
A probability is built over time.

A possibility is fragile.
A probability has weight.

Think about flight.
For thousands of years, human flight was a possibility.
Then structure appeared:

• engineering,

• mathematics,

• propulsion,

• experimentation,

• repeated demonstration.

At some point, flight stopped being a dream and became inevitable.

That’s the movement from possibility → probability.

So how does that transition happen?

My observation is that possibility → probability usually undergoes five proceedings:

1. Language

Someone distinguished a new reality. They distinguish something in the background and move it into the foreground. In the background, it had existed indistinctly, then it was brought into the foreground, where it became distinguished, identified, and recognized.

This distinction has now been made. Before the distinction, there was no difference between “Elder” and “older, people only had “older.”

The new distinctions create new perception and understanding.

2. Embodiment

Someone lives it visibly.

People must encounter human proof.
Not theory.
Presence.

An Elder has to occur in the world.

There are now enough of us Elders occurring in the country to support the “label” of Elder.

3. Structure

The possibility gets organized into repeatable forms. The following list of elements are now established.

Elder Organizations

Elder Conferences

Elder Podcasts

Social Networks

Elder Programs.
Elder Communities.
Books on Being an Elder.
Elder Practices.

Without structure, possibilities evaporate. With structure, it turns into probability.

4. Social Proof

Others begin participating.

At the moment, multiple organizations, communities, podcasts, publications, and networks are delivering Elder development out of the same context and in the same direction.

The culture starts saying:

“Something is happening here.”

My AI estimates:

200,000–500,000 Americans are actively involved in conscious aging or Elder-development work.

10,000–50,000 are functioning as recognizable Elders whose identity and way of being have fundamentally shifted.

10–15 million Americans are likely “Elder-capable”—people over 65 who are searching for a life beyond retirement, consumption, and decline.

5. Momentum

The idea starts reproducing beyond the founders.

That is critical.

The moment a conversation no longer depends on a single person, it enters the realm of probability.

It is not merely attention.
It is a structural movement.

The possibility, now a probability, means it is realizable. Not “pie in the sky,” but “pie on the table.” Elder is now understood as another stage of development.

Elder as a probability is now exists.

A possibility is a spark.

A probability is a fire.

A possibility says, “Maybe.”

A probability says, “We’re already underway.”

For most of human history, Elder existed only as a possibility. An occasional wise man. An occasional wise woman. A rare exception.

Today, something different is occurring.

The language exists.
The people exist.
The organizations exist.
The books exist.
The conferences exist.
The communities exist.
The practices exist.
The momentum exists.

Most importantly, the need exists.

At a time when the culture is drowning in information and starving for wisdom, the emergence of Elder is no longer a romantic idea or spiritual aspiration.

It is becoming a social necessity.

The real question is no longer whether Elders will emerge.

The question is whether enough of us will emerge soon enough.

Because the future does not merely need older people.

It needs people capable of bringing perspective where there is panic, discernment where there is noise, responsibility where there is blame, and wisdom where there is power.

That is the work before us.

Not someday.

Now.

The possibility has spoken.

The probability has entered the room.

And once a probability reaches critical mass, culture changes.

Same age.

Different life.

Different future.

THE AGEISM TRAP

The Aging Workforce Is Exposing a Much Bigger Problem

What’s important today isn’t simply how many people are working. It’s who is working—and how old they are.

Numerous reports show America’s workforce is getting older. Financial pressure, longer life expectancy, and inadequate retirement savings are keeping people on the job longer than previous generations.

Today, nearly one-fourth of the workforce—24.5 percent—is age 55 or older. That’s the fastest-growing segment of the labor force.

But I think something else is happening that few people are talking about.

The longer older adults remain in jobs, the more ageism may actually be increasing.

Not because older workers are doing nothing wrong.

Because younger workers are trying to move up the ladder at the same time.

Titles. Promotions. Income. Influence.

Only so many seats at the table.

As the gap widens, the language changes.

It becomes us versus them.

And ageism grows.

THE REAL PROBLEM

The problem isn’t older people.

The problem is that our culture only knows how to value people through the lens of work.

Think about it.

In America, your worth is measured by productivity.

Can you still perform?

Can you still compete?

Can you still keep up?

Can you still produce?

Older adults find themselves trapped in a game that gets harder every year.

They must continually prove they are still useful.

Still employable.

Still relevant.

Still worth keeping around.

The conversation becomes:

“Can they still do the job?”

Instead of:

“What unique contribution does age make possible?”

That’s a very different question.

As more older adults remain identified primarily as workers, society becomes even more conditioned to judge them by younger standards:

• Speed

• Adaptability

• Technological fluency

• Productivity

• Competitiveness

Good luck with that.

No matter how capable you are, there is always a 32-year-old who knows the software update before breakfast.

And eventually, a 22-year-old who doesn’t understand why you printed anything.

The deeper issue is that our culture never developed a meaningful role beyond worker.

It developed the employee.

It developed the retiree.

It even developed “senior citizen,” whatever that means.

But it never developed Elder.

Retirement was never a particularly satisfying answer.

Neither is endless employment.

Both models share the same assumption:

A person’s value is tied primarily to what they produce.

WHAT WE’RE MISSING

Yet many of the qualities most needed in a complex civilization emerge later in life:

• Perspective

• Discernment

• Restraint

• Pattern recognition

• Long-view thinking

• The ability to steady an environment rather than inflame it

• Wisdom

Unfortunately, wisdom is terrible at marketing itself.

It doesn’t fit neatly into a spreadsheet.

It doesn’t show up in quarterly earnings.

It doesn’t generate exciting headlines.

And because of that, culture consistently overlooks both wisdom and the value wisdom delivers.

In a strange way, the longer older adults remain defined primarily as workers, the longer society delays the emergence of Elders.

Fortunately, that story is beginning to change.

Over the last few decades, a growing community of Elder developers, organizations, and practitioners, of which I am one, have begun knocking holes in the cultural narrative.

The castle walls are cracking.

The conversation is changing.

The question is not whether people should work at 70, 80, or even 90.

Many should.

Many want to.

Many have much to contribute.

The real question is whether work is the highest expression of late life.

My colleagues think not.

A civilization that only knows how to use its older population as labor is still trapped in ageism.

A civilization that learns how to access the wisdom of its Elders has taken a very different step.

One asks:

“Can you still produce?”

The other asks:

“What do you now see that the rest of us cannot?”

Growing old is inevitable.

Becoming an Elder is a choice.

WISDOM IN THE WORLD

Following Legacy

It’s become evident that expanding Elder wisdom worldwide would make a profound difference in having the world work.

Look at the deleterious decisions politicians—and we, the people—are making. Look at the conditions under which these decisions are being made. Not a drop of wisdom in sight.

What I see is that we’ve mistaken access to information for wisdom. Information alone doesn’t steady people, clarify judgment, or help us live responsibly. Quite the opposite. It often leaves us confused, reactive, and overwhelmed.

Without wisdom, information becomes quicksand.

The more we consume, the more we become stuck.

I’m talking about wisdom, not knowledge.

Wisdom is the ability to see clearly what matters, what doesn’t, and what the consequences of our actions will be over time.

Wisdom is knowledge tempered by experience, discernment, humility, and responsibility.

The mission—and now the mission of my colleagues—is simple:

Get Elder wisdom to the tables where decisions about the future are made.

• wisdom in politics
• wisdom in business
• wisdom in technology
• wisdom in how we raise children
• wisdom in how we care for one another
• wisdom in how we organize society itself

Right now, many of our biggest decisions are driven by speed, power, profit, outrage, polling numbers, algorithms, and whoever can yell the loudest on cable television.

How’s that working out?

Wisdom brings something radically different:

• long-view thinking
• discernment
• restraint
• perspective
• the ability to steady the environment rather than inflame it

Not older people reminiscing about the good old days.

Not retirees battling for pickleball supremacy.

Not seniors talking about their maladies and which doctors they are seeing.

I’m talking about the emergence of actual Elders as a stabilizing force in the culture.

And frankly, I feel a sense of urgency.

We may be entering a period in human history where wisdom is no longer a luxury.

Wisdom may become a survival skill.

SO, WHAT’S THE STRATEGY?

Honestly, at 81, I’ve become suspicious of grand strategies.

I’ve lived through enough “movements,” “transformations,” and “next big things” to know that most end up as conference brochures, coffee mugs, or TikTok videos.

But this feels different.

Why?

Because nobody is really in charge.

No headquarters.

No central committee.

No Elder Pope.

Just thousands of people arriving at roughly the same conclusion:

“There has to be more to aging than trying not to age.”

When I look around, I see numerous Elder organizations, Elder conferences, podcasts, communities, retreats, books, Substacks, and thousands of online conversations happening.

Most of us don’t know each other.

Yet we’re talking about many of the same things:

· Purpose.

· Mortality.

· Responsibility.

· Wisdom.

· What are our lives now for?

That got my attention.

Maybe the job isn’t to create another organization.

God knows we have enough organizations.

Maybe the job is simply to recognize one another.

To amplify one another.

To stop acting like isolated pioneers and start acting like fellow travelers.

If enough of us do that, something powerful will happen.

The culture will see us.

Not as old people.

Not as retirees.

As Elders.

And once a culture can see something, it can no longer ignore it.

That’s how change happens.

Slowly.

Then suddenly.

A conversation becomes a movement.

A movement becomes a force.

And a force changes what is possible.

From where I sit, wisdom in the world is no longer a nice idea.

It’s becoming a necessity.

Nelson Mandela saw what was possible and sourced a cluster of global leaders who were established and recognized Elders.

A few years later, in our country, the Elder movement was initiated by Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi, Ron Pevny, Harry R. Moody, Connie Zweig, Richard Leider, and Bill Thomas.

Subsequently, Elder was expanded through organizations such as Sage-ing International and the Center for Conscious Eldering.

Then, Chip Conley’s Modern Elder Academy took Elder mainstream. And me, the Contemporary Elder Institute, followed in their wake.

The distinction Elder is now seeping into the cultural narrative. Organizational structures are in place to hold Elder in place and expand its breadth and volume.

THE WISDOM DEFICIT

Why More Information Is Making Us Less Wise

The world has solved the problem of access to information. Anything you need to know, you can know.

Unfortunately, it may have created a crisis of judgment in the process.

Think about it.

At no time in human history have people had access to more information.

More data.

More experts.

More technology.

More podcasts.

More videos.

More newsletters.

More opinions.

More people absolutely certain they know what they’re talking about.

And yet…

We also have more polarization.

More anxiety.

More confusion.

More outrage.

More short-term thinking.

More people yelling at one another from opposite sides of digital fences.

Something isn’t adding up.

The assumption has always been that if people simply had more information, better decisions would naturally follow.

Come on, now. How’s that working out?

The problem is that we’ve confused information with wisdom.

They are not the same thing.

Not even close.

Knowledge tells us what can be done.

Wisdom tells us what should be done.

Knowledge gave us social media.

Wisdom would have asked what social media might do to attention, relationships, children, and democracy before releasing it into the wild.

Knowledge gave us artificial intelligence.

Wisdom asks what kind of human beings we need to become as we create machines that can outthink us in every domain.

Knowledge creates power.

Wisdom governs power.

Knowledge accelerates.

Wisdom steers.

Knowledge asks, “Can we?”

Wisdom asks, “Should we?”

And right now, humanity appears to be developing knowledge much faster than it is developing wisdom.

That’s not a small problem.

That’s a civilization-level problem.

Most of our institutions are designed to reward speed.

Wisdom moves slower.

Business rewards growth.

Wisdom asks, “Growth toward what?”

Politics rewards certainty.

Wisdom is comfortable saying, “I don’t know.”

Social media rewards reaction.

Wisdom pauses.

Sometimes wisdom waits.

Which is probably why wisdom would never survive as an influencer.

Imagine the post:

“Before reacting, consider multiple perspectives, reflect on long-term consequences, and proceed with humility.”

Three likes.

Two comments.

Four unsubscribes.

Yet wisdom is precisely what is missing at many of the tables where decisions about the future are being made.

Wisdom sees beyond immediate gain.

Wisdom considers consequences.

Wisdom includes future generations in today’s decisions.

Wisdom asks not only what benefits me, but what benefits the larger whole.

That is why Elders have become essential.

Not because older people automatically become wise.

Trust me, age alone doesn’t do that.

I’ve met people who have been 17 for 70 years.

An Elder is something different.

An Elder is someone who has converted experience into perspective, perspective into discernment, and discernment into responsible action.

The future doesn’t need fewer experts.

It doesn’t need less information.

It certainly isn’t getting less technology.

What it desperately needs is wisdom.

Wisdom in business.

Wisdom in government.

Wisdom in education.

Wisdom in technology.

Wisdom at the table before decisions become consequences.

Because information can tell us almost anything.

Wisdom tells us what matters.

And that may be the most important conversation of our time.

Let’s understand and listen to H. W. Longfellow, Psalm of Life. He speaks of what matters.

Let It Be

Elders allow themselves to be human. Allowing their humanity is what makes them Elders. Not because they’ve transcended the human condition, but because they’ve stopped arguing with it.

Allowing is not acceptance. Acceptance carries a subtle stance: this shouldn’t be here, but I’ll tolerate it. There’s a quiet resistance embedded in it, a negotiation with reality. A tightening.

Most have their anger, fear, and doubts, but they’re still attached to it, managing it, keeping it in check.

Allowing has no argument at all.

Nothing to fix. Nothing to manage. Nothing to hide.

What is present is permitted to be present—fully, cleanly, without commentary. Fear shows up? It’s here. Anger arises? It’s here. Self-doubt, irritation, grief, joy—they come and go without requiring justification or suppression. There is no effort to be “better.” Ther is no effort to resist.

Elders know, resistance causes persistence.

And by allowing, something unexpected happens.

From that absence of resistance, something stabilizes. Clarity returns. Reaction loosens its grip. You’re no longer consumed by what you feel, because you’re no longer fighting it. What is needed becomes visible without distortion.

That is what makes us Elders—not perfection, not composure, but the capacity to be fully human without being run by it.

We are complex beings. There is a human side and what people often call a spiritual side. The human side comes with the full package: insecurity, anger, pride, comparison, the inner critic, the need to be right, and the need to be seen. None of that disappears with age. If anything, it becomes more obvious.

Elders allow themselves to have all of it.

Spirituality, as it’s commonly pursued, often tries to rise above this—to quiet it, transcend it, outgrow it. But when you put too much weight there, something else happens. The human doesn’t disappear; it goes underground. It leaks out sideways—through judgment, superiority, quiet resentment.

Picture a seesaw.

On one side: your humanity.
On the other: your spirituality.

Weight too much in either direction, and the system reacts. Over-identify with the human, and you’re driven by reaction. Over-identify with the spiritual, and you disconnect from what’s real.

Elders don’t choose sides. They balance their seesaw.

Not by controlling it, but by allowing both to coexist. The anger is there, and so is the awareness of it. The fear is there, and so is the steadiness that holds it. Nothing is denied. Nothing is elevated above the rest.

This is mastery—not control, not suppression, but allowing.

Allowing is what keeps the system in balance. It integrates rather than divides. It brings the human and the spiritual into the same space, where neither dominates, and neither disappears.

And from that integration, a different kind of presence emerges.

Grounded. Unforced. Reliable.

An Elder doesn’t rise above being human.

They stand within it—fully—and are no longer moved around by it.

That’s the difference.

ELDER: THE NEXT HUMAN DEVELOPMENT

The culture has development models for children, adolescents, and adults. We recognize stages of physical growth, emotional maturity, cognitive development, career advancement, and even “finding yourself” in your twenties.

But then something strange happens.

Around retirement age, development stops. Not biologically—culturally.

After a certain age, the conversation shifts from development to decline management.

Maintain your health. Protect your assets. Stay active. Downsize. Avoid irrelevance. Look younger. Retire comfortably. Don’t become a burden.

In other words: survive as attractively as possible.

That is not human development. That is maintenance with better lighting.

What’s been missing is the next developmental stage of human existence: Elder. That missing is now being backfilled by a growing recognition that humanity does not simply need older people who survive longer, but Elders who can bring wisdom, stability, perspective, and responsibility into an increasingly fragmented and accelerated world.

NOT “ELDERLY.” ELDER.

“Elderly” is a demographic category. A condition of age. A cultural label associated with diminishment, dependency, and obsolescence.

Elder is something entirely different.

And now, perhaps for the first time in our Western modern culture, Elder is emerging not merely as a spiritual idea, but as an actual developmental movement.

Organizations such as Modern Elder Academy, The Contemporary Elder Institute, The Center for Conscious Eldering, Sage-ing International, Elders Action Network, Encore.org, and the Conscious Elders Network are all, in different ways, helping people transition from older to Elder.

The field is growing steadily and soon exponentially.

An Elder is not simply an older person with more birthdays and better prescriptions. An Elder is someone who has undergone an inner transformation in how they relate to life, self, time, responsibility, and humanity itself.

The Elder is no longer organized primarily around personal success, accumulation, or proving themselves. Something else comes into focus:

What is my life now for?

That question changes everything.

The Elder begins to orient around stewardship rather than acquisition. Contribution instead of self-importance. Long-view thinking instead of immediate gratification. Presence instead of performance.

An Elder sees systems, patterns, consequences, and interdependence more clearly because they are no longer consumed by building a résumé for people they don’t even like.

That’s development.

Not perfection. Not sainthood. Development.

ELDER IS BECOMING A HUMAN REALITY

The culture has treated aging as a problem to solve rather than a stage to fulfill. Billions are spent trying to extend youth, while almost nothing is invested in developing wisdom. We’ve built entire industries around looking younger, while neglecting what it means to become deeper, steadier, and more responsible as human beings.

But something is changing.

People are beginning to realize that living longer is meaningless if you do not develop further.

A world organized around speed, reaction, consumption, and self-interest eventually loses access to perspective, restraint, humility, and wisdom. Elders restore those capacities. Their presence changes environments. Noise decreases. Clarity returns. People begin seeing beyond reaction and immediate self-concern.

Presence has mass.

As artificial intelligence expands knowledge exponentially, human wisdom becomes more—not less—important.

The future will not merely require smarter systems.

It will require wiser human beings.

That is the doorway into Elder.

Not retirement from life.

Initiation into the deepest stage of being human.

An Elder’s Response

I’ve noticed something as I’ve grown into Elderhood.

I don’t experience breakdowns the way I once did. Less panic. Less tightening in the chest and throat. Fewer angry thoughts racing around looking for someone to blame. More space. More focus. More steadiness.

I’ve stopped trying to restore what was.

Most people want things to “go back to normal.” As an Elder, I see that as fantasy. When a phenomenon is over, it’s over.

Everything has a beginning, middle, and end. Egypt. Greece. Rome. The British Empire. The Soviet Union. All powerful. All temporary.

Once a phenomenon loses integrity with its original self, it cannot return to what it was.

America cannot become America again.

That realization changes everything.

The opportunity is no longer restoration.
The opportunity is authorship.

If a civilization is reorganizing itself, Elders can help shape what comes next.

Not because we possess all the answers. We don’t.

But Elders cultivate capacities modern culture is rapidly losing:
long-view thinking, restraint, discernment, perspective, equanimity, and the ability to steady the environment instead of inflaming it.

At this stage of my life, I’m less interested in asking:
“How do we survive?”

I’m more interested in asking:
“What is worth carrying forward?”

That question changes everything.

If you were starting over, what would you preserve? What mistakes would you refuse to repeat? What values would matter enough to survive collapse?

What human capacities become essential when systems fail?

What if this unraveling is not merely destruction?
What if the ending is also an opening?

As an Elder, I see the possibility of reorganizing society around wisdom rather than speed. Stewardship rather than consumption. Responsibility rather than performance. Depth rather than spectacle.

But here’s the challenge:

Elders must show up as Elders, not simply as old people.

What if wisdom became actionable instead of ceremonial?

What if Elders helped shape the next narrative—not as rulers or authorities, but as stabilizing human beings capable of seeing farther than the next election cycle, outrage trend, market swing, or technological obsession?

Every ending leaves residue.

This one is thick and sticky.

But residue can become fertile soil when wisdom is fertilizer.

So what’s the plan?

For Elders to become a real cultural force, we likely need to reach roughly 3.5% of the population—the threshold many social theorists associate with meaningful societal change.

That number is achievable.

There are now more than 60 million Americans over 65. If even 20% were to consciously develop as Elders, the impact would be enormous.

And the timing matters.

The longevity industry is exploding. Billions are pouring into aging, healthspan, AI, senior living, and human optimization. The conversation about aging is accelerating.

But without wisdom, we simply build the next empire with newer technology, faster systems, and better branding.

And repeat the same mistakes all over again.

As an Elder, I see the greatest opportunity precisely where things are breaking apart.

Because when systems destabilize, people don’t just need information. They need steadiness. Perspective. Presence. Wisdom.

That is where Elders belong.

Not hidden away. Not retired from relevance. Not politely fading into the background.

At the table.

As my teacher used to say:
“Breakdowns are the access to the future.” Elders will be ready.

WHAT IF IT’S OVER?

One Elder’s View

You and I may need to confront something most people don’t even want to think about.

Not politically.

Existentially.

I’ve been sitting with another possibility lately. Not a theory. Not some dramatic headline. A real possibility. In fact, it might now even be a probability.

A possibility is a “could be,” a probability is a “shall be.”

What if this country, this culture, this organizing context called the United States, is entering the last stages of its existence?

I’ve lived long enough to stop believing that anything human-made is permanent. Nations aren’t permanent. Economies aren’t permanent. Political systems aren’t permanent. You and I, everybody, are not permanent.

Everything I’ve observed follows the same pattern:
beginning, middle, end.

Phenomena arise. They stabilize. They fragment. They disappear.

Egypt. Greece. Rome. The Aztecs. The Incas.

Gone.

In the last 100 years, The British Empire, The Soviet Union.
Nazi Germany. Yugoslavia.

Poof.

The names remain. The ruins remain. The stories remain.
But the phenomenon itself ends.

Why would we assume we’re exempt?

One of the great human delusions is believing the current arrangement is fixed. Guaranteed. Durable. But I’ve come to know existence doesn’t work that way.

As far as I can tell, the universe itself operates phenomenologically. Everything appears, persists for a while, changes, and eventually dissolves. Every single thing.

Nothing lasts. Impermanence is absolute, unconditional, forever true.

Nothing lasts. Nothing. Not one thing.

Not relationships.
Not institutions.
Not cultures.
Not nations.

Not mountains.
Not me.
Not you.

Distrust. Fragmentation. Loneliness. Institutional exhaustion. Ideological extremism. Economic fear. Technological destabilization. And for me, closer to home, the palpable rise of antisemitism and ageism.

We live in a population increasingly unable to distinguish reality from manipulation. Truth has lost its integrity.

Looking from this Elder’s perspective, it definitely feels like it’s breaking apart. When the original loses integrity in its foundational structures, when they are no longer present, it becomes rubble.

I’m not saying America disappears geographically. The land remains. The buildings remain. The highways remain.

But the phenomenon called “America” — its agreements, coherence, assumptions, identity, and stability — feels like it’s breaking apart right in front of us.

As an Elder, I’ve been through hundreds of these beginning, middle, and end cycles. But now that the likelihood of an “end” is nigh, I’m not having my usual reactions. More, much more curious than distraught.

As an Elder, I’ve learned that breaking apart the pieces always happens at the end of a phenomenon is revelatory. When it breaks apart, that’s when insights and findings occur.

A breakdown uncovers what was unsustainable all along. The ending uncovers the hidden gene of self-destruction beneath.

I also noticed that when something starts falling apart, I have stopped asking:
“How do I preserve it?”

A phenomenon can’t be preserved. It must go out of existence. It’s cosmic. It’s universal. It’s unchangeable.

So, I started asking:
“What was actually holding it together in the first place? What was core? Destroyed the core?”

Fragmentation reveals the truth underneath.

And perhaps this moment is doing exactly that.

Maybe what we are witnessing is not simply political decline.

Maybe it is the end of a particular civilizational story.

NOW WHAT?

And if this ending is probable, the real question is not:
“How do we get back?”

The real question, my Elder question, is:
“What is now required of me?”

That’s the question I am living with now. A question I can no longer avoid.

Who will I be, what will I do, what is required of me now, when America will not be America anymore?

ELDERS KNOW HOW TO BE COMPLETE

In the Elder vocabulary, complete does not mean over or finished with.
Complete doesn’t mean “the end.” It doesn’t come with a curtain drop and then applause.

It doesn’t mean you stop thinking about it just because time has passed.

Look at your life. Relationships end. Jobs end. Conversations end. People die.
“It’s over.”
And yet… the residue lingers. The replay runs on. The commentary continues.

You remember—that heartbreak didn’t end when it ended. It kept going, long past the final dramatic scene. And even after years, there are those times when those flurries of vicious thoughts, deep anger, the buried resentment, the sharp bitterness, erupt. It isn’t over; simply subdued, still there, persisting.

It may be over, it may be finished with, but it is certainly not complete.

To be complete is to be whole, resolved, nothing left open.

Nothing pending. Nothing unsaid. Nothing still quietly running in the background. The emotional charge and physical reactions are gone.

Now, contrast that with ‘over’ and ‘finished with’.

Over is temporal. It ended. That’s it.
You shout into a canyon. The sound stops—it’s over.
But the echo keeps coming back.

That’s the part most people live in.

That’s why they call it an “echo chamber.”

You leave a room, close the door—over.
But you left something unsaid inside.
Now you’re standing outside the door… still in the conversation.
You left the room, but the room didn’t leave you.

The could-haves, the should-haves, the self-incrimination, the blame, the remorse continue to creep in.

Finished with is behavioral.
It has a tone— “I’m done.” Sometimes with a little attitude, sometimes with a shrug.
But walking away is not the same as being complete.

Something can be over and still run you.
Something can be finished and still own space in you.
Only when it’s complete does it release its grip.

Now, the how.

Elders don’t get complete by waiting. Or hoping. Or “processing it over time.”
That’s avoidance with a wellness vocabulary.

Completion is existential. Existential refers to anything that has to do with existence itself—being alive, being human, and the fundamental conditions of life like meaning, freedom, choice, and death.

It points to the questions you can’t outsource: why you’re here, how you live, and what your life stands for.

“Over” and “finished with” are surface-level—they deal with time and behavior. Something ended, or you walked away. That’s administrative. Life keeps moving, but the thing may still be sitting inside you, unresolved.

Completion is existential because it alters your state of being. It’s not about the event ending, it’s about whether it still exists in you as unfinished business.

When something is complete, it no longer defines your mood, your reactions, your future. It has no more say. It has no more sway.

“Over” happens in time.
“Finished” happens in behavior.
“Complete” happens in being.

HOW ELDERS GET COMPLETE

First, they tell the truth. Not the edited version. Not the version that keeps them looking good. The actual truth, what happened, what they did, what they didn’t do, what it cost. Until the truth is clean, completion is not obtainable.

Second, Elders take responsibility. Not blame—responsibility.
Blame asks, Who screwed this up? Who screwed me?
Responsibility asks, What is mine here? What’s required now?
And then they take that on. No negotiation.

Third, they clean up what’s left open.
Conversations not had. Apologies not made. Gratitude not expressed. Decisions not declared.
If there’s a call to make, you make it. If there’s something to say, you say it.
Not someday. Today. “Someday” is where completion goes to die.

Fourth, Elders drop the argument with the past.
This is where most people get stuck. They want completion—but only if what happened didn’t happen.
That’s not completion. That’s fantasy.

An Elder lets what happened be what happened. No appeal. No retrial.

And finally, they declare it complete.
Not casually. Not as a bypass. But as a conscious act when the work is done.
Completion is a stand you take.

And just to keep it human: most people don’t need ten more years of analysis.
They need a phone… and a spine.

Completion isn’t mystical. It’s disciplined.
And when something is truly complete, it no longer takes up real estate in your life.

Play it loud and dance: When you’re complete, “you’re already gone.”

COME TO THE EDGE

I’ve taken Gandhi’s quote to heart: “Be the change you want to see in the world.”

Who am I as a model of Elder in the world?

Will this model inspire others? Will others see themselves in me and become more courageous, take more risks? Be willing to step into their power?

Will this Elder open new possibilities for others as they grow old, and have them see the benefits and costs of being an Elder?

Will I be able to present myself as a powerful change agent and actually make a difference in the world?

Will I be able to bring wisdom to decision-making so we stop causing harm and greater suffering?

The inner voice of “shouldn’t, can’t, not good enough, imposter,” were like spam calls throughout my day.

Then, of course, the internal questioning of my sanity: “At your age. Are you crazy? Why would you leave a very stable past for an uncertain future?”

But then I remember the poem.

“Come to the edge,” he said. “We can’t, we’re afraid!” they responded. “Come to the edge,” he said. “We can’t, we will fall!” they responded. “Come to the edge,” he said. And so they came. And he pushed them. And they flew.”

This was my freshman picture in Dental School, 1966. And this was me in April 2026.

Sixty years. That’s a good run. No complaints.

And now, at this stage of life, I get to take my own advice. Not quote it. Not teach it. Live it.

Trust what’s now unfolding. I’m listening to that quieter voice that doesn’t argue, doesn’t negotiate, just points.

My final horizon isn’t theoretical anymore. It’s in my face.

My runway? Let’s just say they’re not adding any more asphalt.

And here’s the truth: The capacities that got me through those sixty years — drive, building, solving, pushing — useful, yes… but not sufficient for what’s next.

Something else is required now.

And it’s not just personal.

My colleagues and I are very close — closer than most people realize — to having Elder become real in the world. Not as an idea. Not as a nice concept. As a lived, recognized presence.

A presence that can repair the world.

And frankly, the world could use it. Things are frayed. Fast. Loud. Reactive. Threatening. You don’t need a study to see it. Just turn on the news — or better yet, don’t.

Elders don’t fix everything. But they stabilize. They bring perspective where there is none.

Elders interrupt the drift. And here’s what’s different now:

The resources are here. The people are here. The structures are rapidly forming.

We’re on the very leading edge of the “tipping point,” ready to break through to the Major Majority.

The conversations are happening locally, nationally, and globally.

Even AI — of all things — is now part of the mix.

What used to feel “someday” … is now standing at the front door.

And for me?

My attention is clear. My intention is set. That quiet, persistent voice — the one I’ve learned not to ignore — is saying: Finish this.

Help bring Elder as a reality across the line.

THE FACE

At some point, for an ever-increasing number of people, the face stops being a record of a life lived and becomes the result of decisions about how it should look.

Same person.
Same age moving forward.
Different relationship to being seen—especially in the mirror.

Let’s not get distracted by the procedures. Botox, fillers, lifts, that’s the surface conversation. Easy to argue about. Easy to judge. Easy to defend.

This isn’t about that.

This is about fear.

Not fear of wrinkles.
Fear of disappearance. Fear of becoming inconsequential. Fear of growing old.

In our culture, aging quietly translates into irrelevance. Less visible. Less desired. Less listened to. Less included. The message isn’t stated—but it’s everywhere: you are on your way out.

So, people intervene.

At first, it’s subtle. You still recognize the face. It’s just… adjusted. Rested. Managed. No big deal.

Then something shifts.

The goal moves from looking good for your age to not looking your age at all.

That’s the line that’s crossed.

Because age isn’t just time passing. It’s identity. It’s authorship. It’s visible evidence that you’ve lived something real. But that gets edited out, then something else goes in.

You can see it in public figures. You don’t need to know what they’ve had done. That’s not the point.

You just know.

Something doesn’t land. The face doesn’t quite match the life behind it.

Not wrong. Not bad. Just… constructed.

And here’s the cost nobody talks about:

You don’t just change your face.
You change your relationship to being seen.

Instead of being a witness to altered faces, you are now an active participant.
Instead of aging, you now manage the appearance of not aging.

That management never ends. It can’t. Time doesn’t stop. So, the effort must be kept up.

That’s a treadmill—with better lighting.

Now here’s the turn.

An Elder doesn’t fight aging.
They don’t surrender to it either.

They use it.

Lines become evidence. Not defects.
Age becomes signal. Not liability.

Same age.
Different life.

One path tries to stay relevant by controlling the image.
The other becomes unmistakable by standing in what is real.

Which one has the greatest integrity?

You can feel the difference instantly.

One asks to be seen.
The other cannot be missed.

No procedure can produce that.

And no amount of fear can stop it.

HOW ELDERS STOP THE ANTI-AGING DRIFT

Elders don’t stop anti-aging by arguing with it.
They stop it by making it irrelevant.

Right now, anti-aging wins because it solves a problem:
If I lose my looks, I lose my place.

Fair enough—if your value lives in your face.

An Elder moves the center of gravity.

I am not how I look.
I am what happens around me.

Clarity increases. Noise drops. People settle. Better decisions get made.
That’s not Botox. That’s presence.

And presence ages well.

Elders stop obsessing about the mirror. They stop comparing themselves to the talking heads on the news and the magazine covers in their doctor’s office.

So here’s the shift:
As long as identity = appearance, you’re on the treadmill.
Maintain. Adjust. Inject. Repeat.

No finish line. Just a better-lit version of anxiety.

Elders step off the treadmill.

Not because they’ve “accepted aging” like it’s some consolation prize.
Because they’ve become more valuable than their appearance.

Elders have real value in the world.

That’s the move.

They make aging visible as power:

• They see patterns others miss

• They don’t overreact

• They think in decades, not headlines

• They have keen insight, undiluted self-understanding

You spend ten minutes with someone like that, and wrinkles stop being the main event.

Now, a little honesty.

Elders understand. They name it:
“This isn’t enhancement. It’s fear management.”

Not as judgment. As distinction.

And finally—this matters most—Elders don’t preach.
They demonstrate.

You feel it when they walk in. The room changes.
Less proving. More seeing.

That experience does more to end anti-aging mania than any opinion ever will.

So no, you don’t fight Botox.

You outgrow the need for it.

That’s one of the great gifts of becoming an Elder.

Same age.
Different life.

Marc’s Theme Song

NOT If BUT When

For an Elder, a shift happens that alters their relationship to death: from conceptual to tangible. The statement “you’re going to die” moves from intellectual understanding to direct experiential knowing. That shifts your thinking of death not as an “if,” but a “when.”

“If” is if something happens, if an accident occurs, if I get sick, if a nuclear bomb is dropped. “If” helps foster a sense of distance from death. “If” puts death in a future temporality – something “out there,” sometime but not now.

But a “when” is totally different. For me personally, my “when,” given my genetic profile and family history, now living in a collapsing environment, in a world of increasing threats, my estimated time of departure is ~92. I’m now 81.

Whether 92 is true or not is inconsequential. Putting it in time makes death real. By this calculation, I have 4,015 days left. So far, I’ve lived 29,565 days; 4,015 is 13.5% of 29,565 days. Makes the time left precious and urgent.

Part of our Elder development work in the enterprise is enabling late agers to move themselves from their “if” to their “when” about death. That shift alters life...how does it alter life as lived?

It simplifies things quickly. Petty concerns lose their grip. Time is no longer something to spend; it’s something to steward. You begin to ask different questions:

What matters now?

What is mine to complete? What am I leaving behind—intentionally, not accidentally?

And the Earth moves from backdrop to responsibility. Less extraction. More care.

Not because you should—but because you see you’re not separate from what you’re about to leave.

EARTH & ME

In this altered relationship with death, your relationship with the Earth is also changed. What’s changed is the illusion of distance.

The Earth is no longer “out there,” a backdrop for a personal life. It becomes the context you are inside of—and responsible for.

Ownership gives way to stewardship. Consumption softens. Conservation becomes important. Urgency sharpens. Time is no longer abstract, so the impact of your living—what you take, what you leave—stops being theoretical.

What’s realized is simpler, and harder to ignore: you were never separate. The air, the water, and the soil are not resources; they are, and always have been, conditions necessary for your existence.

When “when” replaces “if,” legacy becomes immediate. Not a plaque. Not a story. Your footprint.

An Elder doesn’t approach the Earth as something to manage or save in the heroic sense. That’s still ego, just dressed in green. The relationship becomes quieter and more exacting: reduce harm, restore where you can, and refuse indifference.

You begin to act locally, consciously, because that’s where you actually live. You think generationally because that’s what now matters.

Less taking. More tending. And no applause required.

EARTH FUNERAL – MY CHOICE

Return to Nature

You don’t have much of a choice when and how you die. But you do have a choice after you’re dead. Here’s mine.

I chose Earth Funerals because they tell the truth without decoration. No polishing the story, no pretending we’re separate from where we came from.

An Earth Funeral is simple: no embalming chemicals, no metal caskets, no sealed vaults. The body is placed in a biodegradable shroud or casket and returned directly to the soil as compost, often in a natural burial ground where the land is protected, not landscaped into a showroom.

Why this? Because at 81, I’m not interested in a final act of insulation. I’ve spent a lifetime taking from the Earth—food, water, space, energy. The least I can do is give something back without making a mess on the way out.

It’s not sentimental. It’s aligned with my being an Elder. Contribution is a strong core value of an Elder. When I go, I go back to where I originated. Cleanly. Quietly. No inert, non-decomposing casket or cremation ashes, just a clean handoff back to the source.

Of my five compost canisters, one will go right there. My compost will break down into humus, the dark, rich, stable material that holds water and feeds soil life. I’ll then be absorbed by a 500-year-old tree. What an incredible future awaits.

HOW DO I BECOME AN ELDER?

In Part 1, we asserted,

Becoming is not movement.

It’s an orientation.

But an orientation toward what?

That’s the question Part 1 left open — deliberately.

Because if becoming is an orientation, then what you orient to determines everything. It determines how you listen, what you notice, and how you respond when life gets complicated.

Most lives — well-lived, productive, even admirable — are still organized around the self: needs, fears, preferences, history, identity. Nothing is wrong with that. It got you here. And it isn’t going away.

But it won’t take you to Elder. Doesn’t give you access to Elder.

An Elder orients their life around four things:

1. Orient to what is required in the moment

This is situational. Fluid. Immediate.

You walk into a tense room — people arguing, posturing, defending. What’s required is not your opinion.

What is needed is stability, clarity, and equanimity.

“What can I do or say to stabilize this condition?”

Then act. Not heroically. Appropriately.

Remember, the only way people will listen is if you speak from wisdom, not good advice; from unbiased observation, not from being right. When they hear you as a wise Elder, you are one. So, figure out how to be heard as an Elder. Learn how to manage listening so your wisdom lands.

2. Orient to a higher purpose

Not a goal. Not a bucket list.

A higher purpose is what your life is now compelled to follow, given everything you’ve seen and lived.

Higher purpose is your through-line.

It answers: Why am I still here — and for what?

Once that’s clear, it becomes your reference point. Decisions align. Noise drops. You’re not pulled in ten directions because you’re not trying to be everything to everyone, including yourself.

A higher purpose decides how you decide.

A higher purpose is not something you find “out there,” because it lives in you. It’s just concealed. So, on your Elder journey, it’s about peeling back self-deception, irresponsibility, and fear, so your higher purpose can emerge.

3. Orient to the long view

Most people are trapped in short-term reactions — what just happened, what they feel, what they want resolved now.

An Elder sees patterns. Time horizons. Consequences.

They’re less interested in winning the moment and more interested in what this moment sets in motion.

That alone changes how you speak, act, and intervene.

Elders ask themselves where this conversation is headed and what the future will be if this conversation continues in this manner.

Elders manage conversations so that a future for the long-term common good results.

4. Orient to the environment you are shaping

Here’s where it gets very real.

An Elder is not just living a life—they’re shaping a field.

Every room you walk into has a tone. Reactive. Anxious. Competitive. Fragmented.

Most people adapt to it.

An Elder stabilizes it.

Without announcement. Without authority. Just by how they are — clear, grounded, not hooked.

They don’t ask, “How do I feel in this room?”

They ask, “What can happen in this room because I’m in it?”

Now, a quick reality check — with a little humor.

You won’t live here all the time.

Someone will cut you off in traffic, and your “orientation around what’s required” will briefly become some shouting and cursing, with a raised middle finger. Welcome to being human.

The orientation isn’t perfect. It’s where you return to.

So if you want something actionable, not theoretical: today, in a real situation, when you are in a conversation that has conflict, pause and ask:

What is required here?

Not for me.

Not about me.

Just: what is required?

And then — this is the part — do that.

Not perfectly. Just honestly.

That’s the orientation.

Hold that, return to that, and over time, something shifts.

You’re no longer organizing life around yourself.

You’re organizing it around what matters.

And that’s how you become an Elder.

I don’t have that equanimity, that big picture perspective, that non-attachment, etc., etc., etc. May I suggest you write some articles answering this question? It can frustrate a lot of people to read about an ideal but not receive actionable information to help them move toward that ideal.” — R.P.

A: Good question.

“How do I become an Elder?”

Let’s begin with the word “become.” It’s the keyword in your question. Elder, as you point out, can be an ideal rather than a reality.

You see, becoming precedes action. Become means to come into existence, to come to be, to undergo change or development.

Action occurs in time and space. Becoming does not.

But what is becoming if it’s not an action?

Becoming is a shift in what organizes your actions.

Becoming is not what you do.

It’s where your doing comes from.

Think of it this way: action is visible. Becoming is invisible — but decisive.

Becoming is the shift in the source of your actions.

Let me ground this statement.

You’ve had the experience of “deciding something is over.”

A relationship. A job. A way you’ve been living.

Before that moment, you analyze, debate, and justify. You take actions, but nothing really changes. Then something clicks — not loudly, not dramatically. Just a clean internal shift: I’m done.

After that, your actions changed almost effortlessly. Conversations were different. Decisions were quicker with far less effort. Anxiety left the building. What you tolerated disappeared. A feeling of freedom and ease ensued.

Did you “act” your way into that shift?

No.

The shift happened — and then the actions followed.

That’s becoming.

Becoming is a change in source.

Now let’s talk about becoming an Elder.

If you try to act like an Elder, you’ll manage behavior:

“I should be calmer.”

“I should be more understanding.”

“I shouldn’t react.”

That’s exhausting. And fragile.

But when there’s a shift from:

“How is this affecting me?”

to

“What is required here?”

You understand this difference if you have children; you know exactly what it means. You know the difference between “How is this affecting me?” and “What is required here?”

Your actions reorganize without effort.

You listen differently.

You speak differently.

You don’t get pulled into the same patterns.

Not because you’re trying — but because you’re no longer organized the same way.

That’s becoming.

It’s not an action.

It’s the context that actions arise from.

Another way to say it:

Action is what you do.

Becoming is who you’re being when you do it.

You can’t “do” becoming.

To initiate becoming an Elder, to cause the shift, the first directive is to notice what is currently organizing you… and then to consciously cause a shift. Become self-aware, then make another choice.

This is to be done right in the middle of a real situation.

Someone challenges you.

You feel the familiar reaction rise — defend, explain, justify.

That’s the old organizing principle: protect yourself.

In that moment, you don’t fix the reaction. You don’t suppress it.

You see it. You experience it.

And then you ask, simply:

What is actually required here?

If that question lands — even slightly — the center shifts.

Engaging with that question causes a shift in becoming.

The response that follows is action.

So, if you’re looking for a clean distinction:

Becoming is not movement.

It’s an orientation.

But an orientation to and around ‘what?’

I Speak Therefore I Am

YOU BELONG TO LANGUAGE

You belong to language more than you realize. Long before you formed opinions, language formed the way you saw the world.

The words available to you not only describe but determine what you notice, what you ignore, and what you believe is possible.

Your identity is built inside the structure of language. The labels you accept, the stories you repeat, the beliefs you have, the explanations you give, what you think of yourself — all of them arise from the words you use and sequence.

Change the language, you change the experience. Change the experience, simultaneously you’ve changed who is having the experience. You belong to language.

Language shapes perception. Amazon aboriginals, when shown a picture of a chair, see a Rorschach blob — they have no word for chair, no experience of sitting on one, their parents never told them about chairs. If it doesn’t exist in language, it doesn’t exist.

Most people assume they are thinking independently, but in truth, they think inside the limits of the language they’ve inherited.

Elders understand this about language. They know that words are not decoration. Words are architecture. Elders reconstructed their interior world through the language they’ve consciously adopted.

THE PRACTICE OF SUBTRACTION

Elders are able to choose words that incite insight, self-understanding, and higher wisdom — words that bring forth the Elder in them. This is not accidental. It is practiced.

And practice begins with subtraction.

You can tell the difference between Older and Elder not just by the words they use, but by the words they have consciously removed from their vocabulary. These are the words Elders have stopped speaking — and why.

WORDS NOT SAID BY ELDERS

Because — Because is false cause. “I didn’t do it because…” You make whatever follows the because the culprit, the reason, the excuse. Because extricates you from responsibility.

But — But cancels what came before it. “I hear you, but…” means you didn’t really hear them. The but wipes the slate clean and replaces it with your position. Elders tend to replace but with and, expanding the conversation. “But” shuts it down.

Try — “I’ll try.” Try is a polite form of non-commitment. It sounds cooperative while quietly leaving the exit door open. Elders either commit or they decline. Clear commitments build trust; trying builds caution.

Should — Should is the language of external authority. “You should…” “I should…” It carries judgment, obligation, and guilt. Elders speak from choice rather than from should; they speak about what they choose, prefer, or value.

Can’t — Can’t is a premature conclusion disguised as a fact. Sometimes something cannot be done, but most of the time, can’t simply means “I’m unwilling,” “I’m afraid,” or “I don’t know how.” Elders prefer clarity over disguise.

Always / Never — These are exaggeration words. “You always do this.” “That never works.” Life rarely operates in absolutes. Elders know reality is nuanced, contextual, and evolving. Absolutes inflame arguments and distort what actually happened.

They — “They did it.” “They won’t allow it.” They is the great fog machine of accountability. Who exactly is your “they?” What does your language of “they” say about you?

If — “If things were different…” “If they had listened…” Sometimes if is useful. But often it becomes a fantasy doorway into a past that cannot be altered. Elders work with what is present, not what was or what could have been.

ELDERS SPEAK ELDER

Elders pay attention to their words. They become conscious of the words they speak. They know they create themselves in their speaking.

Your words, at the very moment of speaking them, simultaneously determine who you’re being in the world.

You don’t merely speak words.

Your words speak you.

They taught me this: Language isn’t a tool you use. It’s the environment you live in.

Most people think they’re speaking language. They’re not.

Language is speaking them.

That’s the difference between growing old… and becoming an Elder.

Elders speak Elder so they can be Elders.

MY ASSIGNMENT AS THE KEYNOTE SPEAKER

I’m getting ready to be in front of a few hundred very capable, very experienced, very smart, very well-rehearsed Zoom adults and talk about something most of them have never seriously considered:

They don’t use language.

They live inside it.

Now, that’s not how they see themselves. They think they choose their words. They think they’re expressing what’s already there. They think language is a tool—like a hammer you pick up and put down.

That’s the illusion.

The older traditions don’t share that illusion.

Take the Hebrew word davar, a five-thousand-year-old term. It gets translated as “word,” which sounds harmless enough. But davar also means thing, event, matter, deed.

Same word.

No separation.

To them, a word wasn’t commentary. It wasn’t a clever description after the fact. A davar was something that entered the world and did something.

It moved reality.

So, when you spoke, you weren’t reporting.
You were acting.

Now hold that next to the opening of the Gospel of John:

“In the beginning was the Word…”

The word there is Logos—the organizing principle of reality. And then it says, “The Word became flesh.”

That’s not subtle.

Not “the Word described what happened.”
The Word became what happened.

So now we’ve got two traditions, thousands of years apart, saying the same thing:

Words don’t sit on top of reality.
They generate it.

And just in case you think that’s a Western religious idea, Buddhism steps in and tightens the screws.

Buddha talks about Right Speech.

Most people hear that and think, “Be kind. Don’t lie. Don’t gossip. Don’t talk politics.” Good advice. Keeps Thanksgiving dinner from going off the rails.

But that’s not the point.

Right Speech is about understanding how what you say conditions how you perceive, and how you perceive becomes the world you live in.

So, if your language is:
“I’m getting old.”
“I’m declining.”
“I should slow down.”

That’s not an observation.

That’s your aging construction project.

And you’re the contractor.

What I find slightly amusing is how confident people are when they say these things. Like they’re just being realistic. Just telling it like it is.

No.

You’re telling it like you’ve been told it is.

And then living into it.

So, when I step into these 75 minutes for my keynote, I’m not there to give them more information. They don’t need more information. Nobody does.

I’m there to interrupt the narrative.

To have them see—clearly, maybe for the first time—that the story they’re living into about growing old isn’t neutral, isn’t inevitable, and isn’t even theirs.

It’s constructed. Maintained. Reinforced.

Word by word.

And once you see that, you’re in a different game.

Because now you can’t pretend your words don’t matter.

You can’t keep speaking the same way and act surprised when the same life shows up.

That’s when it shifts.

Not when you learn something new—
but when you recognize:

Every word you speak is a davar.
It does something. It creates something.

And now the question isn’t what you believe.

It’s simple.

What are you going to create next?

Let me start by clearing something up.

Allowing is not rolling over, lighting incense, and saying, “Well… I guess this 0is my life now.”

That’s resignation. Different game.

In the context we’ve been building—language, narrative, the structure of existence—allowing is far less poetic and far more confronting.

Allowing is the absence of resistance to what is already so.

Simple sentence. Brutal in practice.

Most people are in a full-time, unpaid argument with reality.
Not out loud—oh no, we’re far too sophisticated for that.
It shows up as mood, tension, irritation, that low hum of “this shouldn’t be.”

This shouldn’t be happening.
He shouldn’t have said that.
I shouldn’t feel this way.
This stage of life shouldn’t look like this.

We don’t say it. We live it.

Allowing is the moment that the argument stops.

Not because you’ve fixed anything.
Not because you agree.
But because you finally realize this is what is so.

And something relaxes. Not collapse—clarity.

Now we get to the part that matters.

Allowing is what makes space for an Elder to show up.

Without it, you’re busy. Reacting. Managing. Fixing. Defending who you think you are.
With it, you’re available. You can actually see—patterns, consequences, what’s required.

Allowing doesn’t make you passive. It makes you dangerous in the best sense of the word.

You can:

• speak without the extra emotional garnish

• act without distorting what’s in front of you

• hold tension without rushing to resolve it just to feel better

• let people be exactly who they are… which, by the way, is harder than it sounds

This is how an Elder steadies a room instead of getting swept up in it.

Another way to say it:

Allowing is the end of the internal commentary that insists reality should be different than it is.

It’s the clean “this is it,” without the editorial, the footnotes, and the dramatic soundtrack.

And when that noise drops out, something else comes online—clarity, right action, a kind of grounded power.

Not the power that dominates. The power that holds.

Now, here’s the edge most people miss.

Allowing is not approval.

You don’t have to like it.
You don’t have to agree with it.
You don’t have to endorse anything harmful, unjust, or just plain stupid.

You just don’t start by arguing with reality.

You start with it.

Because if you don’t, whatever you do next is built on distortion—and distortion is expensive.

An Elder doesn’t waste time fighting what has already happened.

They see it.
They allow it.
And then—they act in a way that changes what happens next.

That’s allowing.

ELDERS ALLOW DEATH

Now let’s bring something into the room that most people politely keep in the hallway.

Death.

We don’t allow death. We manage it linguistically.
“Passed away.”
“No longer with us.”
“As if they just stepped out for coffee and might be back.”

We push it to “someday.” Preferably far, far away.

Here’s the problem.

Death is not someday. It’s present. Quietly, steadily, shaping everything.

And when you don’t allow it, life gets… sloppy.

You postpone what matters.
You cling to what doesn’t.
You argue about things that won’t matter in a week, let alone a lifetime.

You live as if time is renewable. It’s not.

Allow death to be present—not dramatically, not morbidly, just honestly—and something sharpens immediately.

Not philosophically. Practically.

What matters becomes obvious.
What doesn’t quietly exits your conversation.

The need to be right? Disappears.
The small resentments? Hard to justify.
The endless mental negotiations? They start to look… a bit ridiculous.

Death has a way of cleaning up the room.

It also restores proportion.

You begin to feel the weight of your choices—not as pressure, but as significance.
Time is no longer something you “spend.” It’s something you honor.

And here’s the paradox.

When death is allowed, life is no longer something you clutch and protect at all costs.

It becomes something you actually live.

Fully. Directly. Without all the padding.

An Elder doesn’t wait for death to show up uninvited.

They give it a seat.

Not as an enemy. As a living, strategic reference point.

And with that quiet companion beside them, life becomes defined, unburdened… and unmistakably real.

Death makes a life worth living.

Because they see it. They see it for what it is.

An Elder doesn’t react. That’s the first shift.
Not passive. Not indifferent. Just not hooked.

They’ve seen enough to recognize the pattern:
outrage fuels outrage,
certainty hardens into blindness,
identity becomes armor—and then a weapon.

While everyone else is busy swinging,
the Elder steps out of the boxing ring entirely.

And that changes everything.

Trump runs on reaction. It’s his oxygen.
Criticize him, attack him, try to take him down, you’re feeding the system that sustains him.

An Elder breathes different air.

Not silence. Not withdrawal.
Something far more unsettling:

Clarity.

“This is what is occurring.”

No spin. No righteousness. No performance. No judgment.
No need to be right. No need to make him wrong.

Just—what’s so.

Clean. Unembellished. Undramatic.

And here’s what most people miss:

Now, fair warning, this won’t trend.
It won’t light up social media.
It won’t win the news cycle.

It won’t get a fellow Elder or me on 60 Minutes.

But it does something far more consequential.

It changes the field.

And that’s the point.

Trump is not just a person. He’s a field phenomenon—
amplified by a culture of speed, fragmentation, and reactivity.

You don’t eliminate a field phenomenon by attacking the figure.

You shift the field.

And when the field shifts,
you don’t have to force anything.

Behavior changes.
Perception changes.
Action reorganizes—on its own.

That’s the work of an Elder.

To stand where others won’t.
To remain steady when others escalate.
To speak clearly when others perform.
To take responsibility for the tone, the depth, and the direction of the conversation.

Elders don’t overpower Trump.

They make him unnecessary.

Same country. Same moment.
Different way of being.

And in the end, that’s the only move that actually changes anything.

Becoming an Elder is your “Ace in the hole.” You hold the very card to trump Trump.

In Chen and Stephan’s book, Why Civil Resistance Works, they reported that to change a political system, including its representatives, only 3.5% of the population is required.

In our country, 3.5% is 12 million people. And 12 million is also 20% of the 60 million over 65 in this country. That’s the 20% of the late-aged population who can become Elders.

Therefore, the 12 million is not an “airy-fairy” goal, but rather a goal that is reachable.
