LONELY OR ALONE
By Yourself, but Never Without Yourself

As we age, we become increasingly isolated. Our heroes die. Our friends die. Our neighbors die. We move to places where we know few people, if any.

Some people are lucky enough to age in the same community. Some have spouses who are still walking alongside. But no matter if it’s later or sooner, we will all find ourselves by ourselves.

Culture deepens that isolation. It pushes the late-aged out for being too slow, too analog, too far behind the pace of a world built for speed. Like the hunter-gatherer left behind because he can’t keep up with the tribe, the aging are quietly left behind by a culture that no longer waits.

We’re perceived as providing minimal or no value. In an information-driven culture, value is measured by performance — professional performance, social performance, relationship performance. And when the performance slows, so does our perceived worth.

Look, the longer you live, the more alone you become. Unavoidable. Irreversible. Irrevocable. That’s just the way it is.

Because this is constant, Elders prepare for being alone. Without preparation, being alone directly leads to loneliness.

DISTINCTIONS FIRST

Lonely is not the same as alone. Alone means no one else is in the room. Lonely means no one seems to recognize or acknowledge that you are in the room. You are not seen. You are not heard. You are a ghost.

Elders learn how to be alone and content — at least much of the time. They’re still human, so they have the same reactions, feelings, and thoughts that arise when that sense of loneliness, of not belonging, occurs. The difference is that they know what is causing those feelings.

Like you, Elders have this experience at a party — dozens of people, multiple conversations going on, a crowded bar, every high-top full — and still feel completely alone.

Loneliness is painful. You are right in the middle of those moments when you are deemed unworthy of belonging. That hurts.

And I’m sure you’ve read the reports — now evidence-based and clinically proven — that prolonged loneliness increases stress, poor sleep, depression, cognitive decline, cardiovascular disease, weakened immunity, and earlier death. It is well known.

The cost is not only personal. Our healthcare system has done an extremely poor job accounting for loneliness’s role in the severity of chronic disease. Loneliness costs billions — in money spent managing what it worsens, and in the health outcomes it quietly erodes. Reducing it would increase healthspan, strengthen communities, stabilize families, and protect personal wealth. But even a healthcare system that woke up to this tomorrow couldn’t do the inner work for you.

So, without outside systems built to support their intentions, Elders learned to go it alone — to figure out, for themselves, how to be alone.

HOW ELDERS REDUCE THE IMPACT OF BEING ALONE

Elders have found that loneliness is not the inevitable price of aging. Aloneness can become solitude — a place for reflection, a time for creativity, an opening for spiritual connection.

Elders prepare by developing their rich inner life while continuing to reach outward. But most importantly, their focus and intention center on a meaningful connection with who they really are. That’s where the “gold” is located.

Elders focus on building a spacious inner life to live freely within and without. Building an expansive inner life is the Elder’s Super Power.

The goal is not to avoid being alone. That battle cannot be won. The goal is to become whole enough that aloneness no longer feels like abandonment.

Loneliness says, “No one sees me.”

Solitude says, “I see myself.”

Elderhood adds, “And myself as a self is the real gift.”

You may be by yourself. But you are never without yourself.

VULNERABILITY

THE EXTRAORDINARY POWER OF HAVING NOTHING TO PROVE

Vulnerability is the willingness to be seen as you actually are—not as you want others to see you.

For me, it means allowing people to witness my unknowingness, my uncertainty, my caring, my fear, my failures, and my unfinished parts.

Vulnerability lets me stand on: “This is where I am. This is who I am.” No pretending. No glaze. No hype. Not going for their vote.

Most of us were taught the opposite. I know I was.

I grew up in Philly in the 1950s and ‘60s, a first-generation son of an Eastern European Jewish immigrant. Ellis Island—the whole trip.

In my family, in an immigrant culture, in the rough-and-tumble city, toughness was honored. “Get up. Get back in the ring. Keep fighting.” The Rocky Balboa attitude. That’s Philly.

Like you, I built a personality capable of succeeding in the world. Antisemitism made it harder, but still doable in the U.S.

Like you, I formed an identity from my strengths, professional achievements, and membership in social and professional groups. Won some awards. Got some industry press.

Like you, I strengthened my ego so I could defend my identity whenever it felt threatened. And it frequently felt threatened.

Like you, I spent years appearing competent, confident, certain, and in control. I did my best to prevent anyone from seeing my defects. I worried that if the truth were revealed, what would they say?

So, I equipped myself with a suit of armor—emotional, psychological, and existential. I chose the thickest breastplate. Protect the heart at all costs.

But armor does two things. It keeps people from getting in, and it keeps you from getting out.

Elders shed their armor. Some remove it piece by piece. Others leave the whole contraption behind. It has become too heavy to carry.

What allows an Elder to do that?

As an Elder, what I have discovered is that personality is useful, but it is not who they are.

Identity serves a purpose, but it is fluid, not permanent.

The ego may well be protected, but it should absolutely not run the whole show. Ego is not nearly as qualified for the job as it thinks it is. As an Elder, heart and intuition have equal time with ego, and have veto power.

Something remarkable happens when we Elders stop maintaining a personality and defending an identity: the fear of being exposed disappears. There is just so little to protect.

That is why vulnerability is not an Elder’s weakness. It is their strength.

An Elder can say “no” without regret or guilt—and “yes” only when they mean it. Each statement requires chutzpah because each risks telling the truth instead of performing.

Vulnerability does not mean sharing everything with everyone. That is not wisdom. That is simply poor judgment.

When an Elder becomes vulnerable, something changes in the room. Other people relax. People put the brakes on performing. They become more willing to tell the truth, and to confess and disclose.

Elders are not easily embarrassed when they are no longer protecting an image. They aren’t easily diminished because their worth no longer depends on approval.

They are rarely controlled by rejection because they have stopped rejecting those hidden parts of themselves.

Vulnerability is the Elder’s power.

Vulnerability is standing before life without armor—not because you cannot defend yourself, but because you no longer need to defend the person you manufactured yourself to be.

And when the armor finally falls away, what remains is not weakness.

What remains is you.

GETTING OLDER OR GETTING OLD?

There is a moment in late aging when you finally confess you’ve gotten old.

Up until that moment, you consider yourself just getting older.

“Getting” and “gotten” are quite distinct.

Those old people who dawdle in line, drive too slowly, take too long to order lunch, and seem baffled by their phones aren’t you—won’t ever be you.

Old is over there, and you’re securely over here.

But then one day, you notice.

You notice that people are offering you their seats.

Getting your rental car, someone runs out to help you put your luggage in the trunk.

When buying a ticket for the Bainbridge Ferry, they automatically give you a senior ticket.

Your new dentist looks the same age as your oldest grandchild.

You notice, but do not reveal, that stairs have become steeper, print has become smaller, restaurant lighting has become darker, and everyone on television is mumbling.

And then there is the mirror.

You look at it now, expecting to see the person you have always known to be. Instead, it’s your father—or perhaps your grandfather staring back. He looks familiar, but you’re not sure you want to share your bathroom with him.

Then comes the unavoidable, compulsory admission:

“I am not just getting older, I am old.”

That is difficult to say because, in our culture, old is not simply an age. It is a verdict.

In this culture as well as in your head, ‘old’ means diminished, slow, forgetful, dependent, obsolete, unattractive, irrelevant.

We’ve been indoctrinated that getting old means losing the qualities that made us valuable.

Productivity declines.

Authority disappears.

Bodies deteriorate.

Social value fades away.

No wonder we resist the word old. Look what it means. Better to consider what you mean by “old.” You give meaning to words. Your characterizations of ‘old’ keep ageism alive. Yep, you inherently promote ageism.

Old has become culturally abhorrent because it brings us face-to-face with what we have spent our lives avoiding: decline, dependence, separation, and death.

Old threatens the well-constructed identity that we’ve built around being competent, valuable, needed, and in control.

· Getting old says that time is running out.

· Elders ask, “What will you do with the time you have left?”

That is the essential distinction between Elder and older.

You can get old without ever becoming an Elder. Getting old happens biologically. Becoming an Elder is a conscious act.

An Elder recognizes the losses but isn’t defined by them.

For sure, the body changes. Your roles disappear. The people that you love leave. The future becomes shorter, and the past becomes longer. But something else becomes possible: freedom from having to prove yourself.

Without too much effort, you stop competing with everyone, you stop impressing strangers, you stop maintaining an outdated version of who you once were.

As an Elder, you ask different questions.

Not, “How do I stay young?”

But, “How do I become wise?”

Not, “How do I remain important?”

But, “How can I make a difference?”

Not, “How much time do I have left?”

But, “What is the time I have left, what’s it for?”

Admitting that you are old is not surrender. It is not succumbing. It is a wake-up call.

You stop running from the word “old” and reflect on what this word might make possible.

You recognize that old age is not merely a collection of losses. It can be a period of liberation, understanding, and wisdom.

Getting older is biological and gradual.

Getting old is an admission and realization.

Becoming either old or Elder is a choice.

And that choice may turn the age you once dreaded into the most honest, useful, and meaningful passage of your life.

ELDERS GET AHEAD OF THEIR PARTINGS
They Don’t Need to Say Goodbye, They’re Already Gone

“Be ahead of all parting, as though it already were behind you,” Rainer Maria Rilke wrote in Sonnets to Orpheus.

To make the passage from Older to Elder, you consciously work on getting ahead of your partings. It’s a recognition and reflection assignment.

Why is it difficult to get ahead of our partings?

Because of our attachments. Attachments enshrined in us by culture, family systems, ego, and most of all, fear.

As we grow old, we become attached to:

Who and what we once were.
Controlling the future.
Staying relevant, avoiding obsolescence.
Believing our past identities will provide future significance.
Living life so as not to deal with our deaths.

Being attached means holding tightly to a person, belief, identity, possession, or desired outcome—believing who you are depends upon keeping it.

Attachments whisper, “This must remain as I want it, or I cannot be at peace.”

Attachments can turn the things we possess into things that possess us.

Having is the verb of attachment. Having the driver. It makes who you are determined by what you have.

“Have” refers to everything you possess, receive, achieve, retain, experience, or believe belongs to you. Have, have, have.

We usually think of “having” materially: having a house, money, books, photographs, and the impressive collection of things our children will eventually have to dispose of. But “Have” is much larger than possession.

We also have:

Relationships and roles
Health and physical abilities
Status, influence, and recognition
Beliefs and opinions
Memories and personal history
Plans for the future
An identity—who we believe ourselves to be

Now, this isn’t necessarily about giving everything away. No need to place the sofa, wedding silver, and family photographs on the sidewalk before breakfast.

Having is what belongs to you. Being is who you are—even when what you have is gone. It isn’t about the things. It’s about who is relating to them.

It is about becoming free enough that if something disappears, changes, breaks, or passes on to someone else, you do not disappear with it.

“Be ahead of all parting, as though it already were behind you,” requires altering your relationship with “having.”

Elders know that parting is not a single event waiting at the end of life. Partings are happening continuously. We part from youth, careers, positions, physical abilities, homes, friendships, spouses, familiar roles, and cherished versions of ourselves.

Some partings happen with our permission. Most do not bother to ask.

Elders can appreciate possessions without confusing them with themselves.

Elders can honor their history without requiring it to guarantee their future.

BE—DO—HAVE

Be-Do-Have is a model that has served me well since 1978. It gives me another way to understand myself and the world. It is the looking glass, not the one who is looking.

Most of my life I’ve lived backward: Have-Do-Be. If I have enough money, recognition, security, or time, I can do what matters and finally be peaceful.

As an Elder, I have reversed the order.

Who will I be, regardless of what I have?

From that way of being, what am I called to do?

Whatever I then have becomes useful—but not essential to who I am.

To intervene with the “have–do–be” routine, Elders focus on who they are “being,” which automatically alters what they “do,” thus changing their actions and thinking.

Elders understand, you don’t need much when you be enough.

That is how Elders get ahead of their partings. They do not stop possessing or participating in life. They stop requiring what they love to remain.

They hold everything dear—and nothing captive.

Then, when life finally asks them to release what they have, they do not disappear with it. They remain who they have chosen to be—whole, present, grateful—and very much free.

CONSCIOUSNESS: WHAT MAKES AN ELDER AN ELDER

A foundational principle of our work is that the distinction between older and Elder is ultimately a distinction in consciousness, not chronology.

Elders work at becoming conscious of their consciousness. They examine not only what they see, but what determines how they see it.

Most people are conscious, but unconscious of being conscious. Ask someone how their consciousness determines what they notice, ignore, believe, and call “reality,” and suddenly the room becomes very quiet.

The Buddhists remind us that the finger pointing at the moon is not the moon. In the same way, our thoughts and explanations about consciousness are not consciousness itself. They merely point toward it.

Consciousness is the invisible context through which you experience yourself, other people, and the world. It isn’t simply what you think. It is where your thinking comes from.

Change your consciousness, and the same world looks different. The circumstances may remain exactly the same, but you don’t. And when you change, everything changes with you.

Age changes the body.

Experience changes knowledge.

Consciousness changes being.

That is why two people can both be 81 and live in entirely different worlds.

Cultural Consciousness

Our cultural consciousness is generally organized around becoming somebody:

· Building a career, family, and reputation.

· Acquiring knowledge, possessions, and influence.

· Establishing an identity.

· Asking, “Who am I becoming?”

There is nothing wrong with this. It gets houses built, children raised, and bills paid. Consciousness grants attention and intention.

But many people eventually step into an older consciousness without realizing it.

Beware of Older Consciousness

Growing older, by itself, does not transform consciousness. Older consciousness often remains organized around familiar concerns:

· Protect what I have.

· Stay relevant.

· Avoid decline.

· Resist aging.

· Compare myself with younger people.

· Preserve yesterday.

Chronological age has increased.

Conscious age—very little.

Consider Elder Consciousness

Elder consciousness represents a contextual shift.

Instead of asking, “How do I succeed?” an Elder asks, “How can my life make a difference?”

Instead of proving your worth, Elders appreciate their unique worthiness.

Instead of accumulating, they begin getting rid of things. Eventually, someone must explain why we own seventeen coffee mugs.

Instead of demanding certainty, Elders become comfortable with mystery.

They no longer experience life primarily as something happening to them, but as something moving through them. They become the leaf rather than the rock in the river.

Whee.

This is why Elders tend to be more grounded, content, and at ease.

The Elder’s Awareness

Elder consciousness recognizes that:

· Everything is interconnected.

· Every action creates ripples.

· Wisdom is more valuable than information.

· Presence matters more than advice.

· Questions are often better than answers.

· All identities change with age and circumstances.

· We serve those who serve.

· Legacy is not merely what remains after we die, but what awakens in others while we are alive.

Becoming an Elder is not primarily a moral or behavioral achievement. It is a shift in consciousness.

The world may not change. The person experiencing the world does.

I’ve found that becoming an Elder is the ripening of consciousness from self-centered achievement to life-centered stewardship. From “What can I get from life?” to living the question, “What does life want from me now?”

People do not become Elders because they grow older.

They become Elders because their consciousness changes.

NEW WORDS AND THE ELDER
Lookmaxxers, Mogging, and Sexual Market Value

Many in my aging cohort now find words that appear alien to our individual and historical narratives. Words that didn’t exist in our vocabulary. Words that previously didn’t live in our speaking or listening.

Our personal narratives — those stories we tell ourselves about who we are — don’t know these words. Don’t understand these words. Don’t know how to use these words.

Nevertheless, in our egotism, we quickly make up a definition for them, yet we still have no idea what those words really mean.

As change accelerates, the frequency of new words will increase — especially with AI now “juicing” the speed of change.

New words, heard through the culture’s view of aging — that view of becoming obsolete, less relevant, unable to stay current — push those debilitating growing-old buttons. They reinforce the thought that you’re getting behind and will never catch up.

Simply put: new words make you feel old.

So how will Elders handle this? Not by racing to keep up. An Elder listens not only for what a word means, but for what prompted it to come into existence. Words come and go. It’s the meaning that lasts.

Lookmaxxing may be new, but the desire to appear attractive is ancient.

Mogging may sound peculiar, but competing for status has been with us since the first caveman returned with a larger woolly mammoth than his neighbor.

Sexual market value may be new terminology, but the longing to be wanted, chosen, and loved is as old as humanity.

An Elder does not need to master every new expression or pretend to be current. That performance usually ends badly. It always has for me — when I pretend I know, being fake comes right to the surface.

An Elder becomes interested instead. What does that mean? And then, more importantly, listens for what’s under the hood. Wisdom provides access to what’s underneath — the headwater. Understanding from there allows for far greater understanding, and far better solutions.

WISDOM IS ETERNAL

This is what experience teaches: new words become old words, and then they disappear. Like groovy, swell, far-out, and the bee’s knees — once fresh and fashionable, spoken with an air of importance and “hipness,” now mostly identifying the decade in which you learned to dance.

The words of wisdom, however, do not expire. Their core is eternal, not temporal.

That’s because wisdom lives in all of us. It’s innate, inborn, native. For some, unfortunately, it’s buried deep and stays unreachable in their lifetime. Others are blessed — they uncover their inner sage. They unconceal wisdom.

That’s why Elders feel incredibly lucky. The gifts of wisdom are remarkable — remarkable in their impact on how life is lived: greater equanimity, tolerance, humor, gratitude, appreciation.

ELDERS HEAR AND SPEAK WISDOM

An Elder does not fear new language or race to keep up with it. It doesn’t intimidate him or her, and it doesn’t push them over the edge into the cultural old.

An Elder listens through unfamiliar words for the familiar human being beneath them.

Words will continue to arrive, multiply, and disappear. Let them. Our responsibility is not to know every word. It is to recognize the timeless fears, hopes, and longings those words are attempting to express — and to respond with wisdom.

The world may sometimes speak a language we do not understand. But human beings are still asking the same ancient questions:

Do I matter? Do I belong? Am I loved?

Those are questions Elders are here to answer.

New language describes the changing surface of life. Wisdom recognizes what remains unchanged underneath.

IT’S ELDER TIME

The Temporality of an Elder

Time changes when you become an Elder.

Not the clock. You.

One second is still one second. The Earth still circles the sun in 365 days. Your birthday keeps showing up whether you like it or not.

But the experience of time changes dramatically.

This may be one of the least understood distinctions between simply growing older and becoming an Elder.

Older people most often live inside shrinking time.

Every birthday becomes a subtraction problem.

“I don’t have as much time left.”

“I wish I had done...”

“If only...”

“Maybe someday...”

The past becomes heavier. The future becomes shorter. The present almost disappears between regret and anticipation.

The second hand becomes the ruler of life.

Tick.

Tock.

Tick.

Tock.

It begins sounding suspiciously like a countdown.

An Elder lives differently.

An Elder can actually expand time.

Not by adding years to life, but by adding life to years.

A single conversation can feel timeless. Sitting quietly watching the sun disappear behind the ocean can seem to last forever. Playing with a puppy somehow suspends the clock altogether.

Nothing magical happened.

Presence happened.

The Stoic philosopher Seneca wrote, “It is not that we have a short time to live, but that we waste much of it.”

He wasn’t talking about productivity.

He was talking about inhabiting life.

Elders come to realize this.

The older I become, the less interested I am in hurrying toward tomorrow.

After all, I’ve finally arrived at today.

That may be one of aging’s greatest gifts. It certainly is for me.

Eckhart Tolle observed, “When your attention moves into the Now, there is an alertness... as if you are waking from the dream of thought.”

Exactly.

Older often lives in psychological time.

Elder lives in existential time.

There is a difference.

Psychological time is filled with stories.

“I should have...”

“What if...”

“I hope...”

“I’m afraid...”

Existential time asks only one question:

What is here now?

That question changes everything.

An Elder can sit with grief without rushing it away.

Enjoy joy without trying to possess it.

Listen without mentally preparing a reply.

Walk without needing to arrive.

Love without keeping score.

Forgive, not succumb or surrender.

The clock is still ticking, but it no longer dictates reality.

There are moments when an Elder steps completely outside of time.

You have probably experienced them.

Maybe listening to Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue or Weather Report’s Heavy Weather.

Holding the hand of someone you love as they take their final breath.

No one checks their watch.

Because in those moments, there is no before or after.

There is only Being.

Tolle writes, “The present moment is all you ever have.”

I’d add that the present moment is where the Elder focuses on living.

It’s a back-and-forth between terminology, but the frequency is so much higher and getting stronger on being here now for Elders.

That is why Elders seem calmer.

Why they are less reactive.

Why people often leave their presence feeling they somehow have more time than when they arrived.

The Elder doesn’t merely manage time.

The Elder changes the experience of time itself.

Perhaps that is one of the greatest contributions an Elder makes to a frantic culture obsessed with speed.

The world doesn’t need more people racing against the clock.

It needs more people who remind us that beneath every ticking second lies something timeless.

That place is where wisdom lives.

And that place is called Elder.

WHAT TO TELL YOUR FRIENDS WHEN THEY ASK: WHAT’S IT MEAN TO BE AN ELDER?

This is the question.

The most frequently asked question.

The foundational question.

The one question upon which everything else rests.

People don’t have to wonder what it means to grow older. They’re doing it.

They see it in the mirror every morning. They feel it every time they stand up a little too quickly. They have conversations about it—with themselves, with friends, with doctors, with their financial advisor, and occasionally with their knees.

Growing older isn’t an idea. It’s an experience.

They live inside a cultural “field” saturated with stories about aging. A field that quietly—and relentlessly—tells them that growing older means decline, irrelevance, limitation, dependency, and eventually becoming yesterday’s news.

Not exactly a Hallmark card.

Those stories become so familiar that they disappear into the background. They become the context through which people interpret every gray hair, every birthday, every forgotten name, every new ache, every retirement decision, and every glance in the mirror.

Most people never question the narrative because it seems like reality.

But it isn’t reality.

It’s a story.

A story repeated often enough that it becomes “the truth.”

The distinction between growing older and becoming an Elder begins right there. Recognizing it’s a story you’re living into.

An Elder is not simply an older person with more birthdays.

An Elder inhabits an entirely different field.

A different context.

A different way of seeing life.

A different relationship with time.

A different relationship with themselves.

A different relationship with everyone around them.

That is why the question, What does it mean to be an Elder?, is so important.

It is not asking for another definition of aging. It is asking whether there is another possibility altogether.

Is there another way to live the last third of life?

Most people have never been asked. I believe there is.

In fact, I believe becoming an Elder is one of the greater developmental possibilities available to a human being.

It isn’t automatic.

Age doesn’t confer Elderhood any more than owning a piano makes you a piano player.

Birth certificates tell you how long you’ve been alive. They tell you absolutely nothing about who you’ve become, and certainly not who you will be.

An Elder isn’t defined by wrinkles, retirement, wisdom quotes on Facebook, or an impressive collection of prescription bottles.

An Elder is defined by presence.

By consciousness.

By responsibility.

By the capacity to stabilize the human environments they enter.

By becoming someone whose very way of being leaves people, relationships, families, organizations, and communities better than they found them.

That is why this Substack exists.

Not to help you grow older.

You’re already doing that remarkably well.

Its purpose is to invite you into a possibility that our culture has largely forgotten.

To become an Elder.

Because growing old is inevitable.

Becoming an Elder is a conscious choice that requires attention and intention, but its rewards extend far beyond your biological life.

It changes how you experience yourself, how others experience you, and the impact you have on every environment you enter.

It doesn’t simply add years to your life. It adds life to your years—and perhaps, in the process, leaves the world a little wiser than you found it.

The work of an Elder is not just self-development; it is improving the human environments they enter.

ELDER AS TEACHER

For Elders, a teacher is someone who causes learning.

Causes - triggers, sources, sparks.

Elders become teachers in their own right.

Not simply someone who knows more than another person.

Not someone who transfers information from one head to another.

An Elder teacher does something more consequential: they become a teacher who creates the conditions in which another person can see, understand, discover, and become capable of something that was not previously available to them.

An Elder teacher makes a difference in three fundamental ways:

1. They change what a person can see.
An elder reveals distinctions, possibilities, and perspectives that were previously invisible. Once something is truly seen, it cannot be completely unseen.

2. They change what a person believes is possible.
The best teachers often see capacities and futures in us before we can see them ourselves. Their confidence becomes a bridge between who we are and who we might become.

3. They change who a person becomes.
The deepest teaching does not merely add knowledge. It alters identity. An Elder teacher leaves the student different, not simply knowing more, but seeing differently, acting differently, and being differently.

This is why teachers can remain present in our lives decades after the relationship itself has ended. We may forget the lesson plan. We may forget the book. We may even forget the exact words.

But we remember who we became in their presence.

Perhaps that is the simplest definition:

A teacher is someone whose presence, knowledge, and commitment make another person’s growth possible.

THE BUDDHIST MODEL OF TEACHER

Elders become “teachers” much more in the Buddhist tradition than in the Western tradition.

The difference is profound. In the Buddhist tradition, a teacher is not primarily someone who gives you knowledge. A teacher is someone who transforms your consciousness.

A Buddhist teacher doesn’t merely ask, “Did you understand the lecture?” Instead, they ask the deeper question:

“Did your way of seeing reality change?”

In Zen Buddhism, for example, the teacher often refuses to give a straightforward answer. Instead, they practice inquiry. Socratic, Appreciative, and Wisdom Inquiry

Why? Because the goal is not to fill the student’s mind but to free it from its habitual patterns. To see the pattern, not be the pattern.

The teacher is less like a professor and more like a mirror.

The teacher continually points the students back to themselves.

As one Zen saying puts it:

“The finger pointing at the moon is not the moon.”

The teacher points. The student must see.

An American teacher primarily changes what a person knows. A Buddhist teacher changes the context from which a person knows.

That may be the deepest difference. One teaches content. The other transforms consciousness. And once consciousness shifts, new thoughts, actions, and ways of being arise naturally.

DO ELDERS LIVE LONGER?

Elder, as a legitimate, recognized, and participatory component of our culture, is becoming a reality. The Elder stake is firmly in the ground.

Where should the established Elder organizations invest their limited time and money to enhance Elderhood and grow their respective entities?

Most think that finding out where the greatest number of Elders and potential Elders live, then setting up “shop” there, is the smartest move.

It is not.

However, upon examination, there are no demographic hotspots for Elder or Elder candidates at this time. It’s age- and life-experience-related, not location-related.

Now, it just so happens that the greatest concentration of Elders and potential Elders tends to live in or near Blue states.

Why?

People who participate in conscious aging, personal development, contemplative practice, lifelong learning, and transformational communities are more likely to be found in urban and suburban areas, particularly along the East and West Coasts.

That’s where many of these organizations were founded and where higher educational attainment is more common. Those regions also tend to vote Democratic.

But that doesn’t mean Blue States produce more Elders.

All that means is that these organizations currently host more institutions and conversations that support Elder development.

But there is another side to this story, which is just as true.

Many of the qualities you associate with Elderhood—resilience, responsibility, stewardship, commitment to family, generosity, faith, humility, practical wisdom, and service—are abundant in rural America and in many traditionally conservative communities.

They often aren’t called “Elders.” They are called grandparents, ranchers, pastors, veterans, teachers, volunteers, or community leaders.

They have become wise as they’ve gotten older, through their life situations, and reached a way of being that provides greater equanimity with ‘what is,’ a greater tolerance of self and others, and, because of age and a more authentic relationship with their mortality, allowing their higher wisdom to flourish.

An Elder isn’t defined by whether they vote Republican or Democrat. An Elder is defined by how he or she shows up in their community, red or blue, and yes, even purple.

What Elders provide is exactly what our culture is running short of.

Perspective instead of polarization. Stewardship instead of self-interest. Discernment instead of reaction. Responsibility instead of blame. A calming presence instead of another opinion.

The opportunity before us is not to decide whether Red States or Blue States produce more Elders. It is to recognize and develop the millions of potential Elders already living in both.

They may speak different political languages, worship differently, and see the world through different lenses, but the qualities of an Elder transcend ideology. Different routes, different climbing gear, same summit.

The question, then, isn’t Where do Elders live?

The better question is, How do we find them? How do we invite them? How do we develop them?

The next generation of Elders is already among us—in every state, every town, every neighborhood, every political party, every faith, and every culture.

They are waiting, not for permission to grow older, but for an invitation to become an Elder.

That is our work.

Not to build a movement for one side of America, but for all of America. Not to deepen our differences, but to cultivate the wisdom to transcend them.

The future will not be determined by whether we have enough experts, influencers, or politicians.

It will be determined by whether we have enough Elders.

Because in the end, wisdom has no zip code. It has a way of being.

Artificial Intelligence is unlike any technology humanity has ever created.

It is not simply another tool.

It is a new form of intelligence, a never-before-experienced “intelligent species.” A species that reasons, learns, creates, and communicates in ways that increasingly surpass our own.

We are only beginning to understand how to relate to it.

The challenge isn’t AI.

The challenge is us.

AI is advancing exponentially. Human development is not.

Our technology is accelerating while our emotional, moral, and spiritual development is largely flatlined. We have become remarkably good at building smarter machines. We have been far less successful at building wiser human beings.

This gap should concern us. Given the speed of AI’s learning, the gap grows daily.

Throughout history, humanity has repeatedly proven that intelligence alone is not enough. We split the atom, mapped the genome, connected the planet, and now converse with machines that can answer almost any question.

Yet intelligence has not eliminated war.

It has not ended loneliness.

It has not diminished greed, hatred, or tribalism.

Knowledge has exploded.

Wisdom has not.

Fortunately, Silicon Valley didn’t invent wisdom. In fact, it can’t.

AIs can only become smarter; they can’t become wiser. Wisdom requires experience — something AI can simulate but never attain.

An experience is not simply something that happens to you. It is what happens when an event meets your awareness, and you assign it meaning. It moves through you in layers: first the event itself, then awareness through the senses and emotions, then interpretation — the meaning you give it — then response, and finally memory, where the experience becomes part of your story and shapes everything that follows.

This is why experience alone does not produce wisdom. Many people repeat the same experience for decades without learning from it. Wisdom emerges when experience is reflected upon, integrated, and transformed into a new way of being.

That transformation is precisely what the Elder embodies.

For thousands of years, every culture has understood this. Elders were not simply the oldest people in the village. They were the village’s stabilizers — carriers of memory, perspective, restraint, discernment, and judgment. They understood that every decision should be viewed not only for its immediate benefit, but for its consequences seven generations from now.

The modern world has largely misplaced that role.

The Age of AI will demand that we rediscover it.

Artificial Intelligence can recognize patterns. It cannot experience heartbreak.

It can analyze millions of possibilities. It cannot forgive.

It can predict outcomes. It cannot know what it feels like to bury a spouse, welcome a grandchild, sacrifice for another human being, fail spectacularly, begin again, or discover compassion through suffering.

Wisdom is not informational. Wisdom is transformational.

Wisdom is lived experience integrated into character.

No algorithm can download that. No algorithm can deliver that.

As AI assumes more responsibility for knowledge, analysis, planning, and decision support, the uniquely human capacities become more — not less — valuable.

Judgment. Discernment. Humility. Compassion. Perspective. Responsibility.

These are the domains of the Elder.

The future will not belong to those who know the most.

It will belong to those who wisely decide what should be done with what is known.

But there is one thing you can’t get from a book.

The presence of an Elder.

That’s what these conversations are about.

Each month, I’ll sit down with one of today’s Contemporary Elders—people whose lives have been shaped not just by years, but by reflection, discernment, humility, and lived wisdom.

We’ll explore what it truly means to become an Elder in today’s world, with conversations that challenge assumptions, provoke new thinking, and occasionally make us laugh at ourselves. (After all, if you can’t laugh at getting older, you’re probably taking it too seriously.)

STOP TALKING, THEY AREN’T LISTENING

Everyone working in the Elder and late-aging space champions intergenerational communication through mentoring, coaching, teaching, and dialogue.

The assumption is simple: wisdom spoken, wisdom heard.

Wisdom drawn from lived experience alters a younger person’s perspective. It expands how they see, interpret, and respond to life.

A wonderful idea.

Unfortunately, that’s not usually what happens.

More often, it’s wisdom spoken, wisdom not heard.

Many younger people are not listening in a way that allows wisdom to land. They are listening through a filter of assumptions, judgments, and conclusions that were formed long before a single word was spoken.

The internal conversation sounds something like this:

“You’re old.”
“You don’t understand today’s world.”
“Your generation created this mess.”
“Things are different now.”

Perhaps they are.

Every generation believes its problems are unprecedented. Elders simply know life has a remarkable way of humbling every generation.

The problem isn’t intelligence.

It’s listening.

Wake up, ageism is a two-way street.

Older adults often dismiss younger generations as entitled, fragile, impatient, or distracted.

Younger adults often dismiss older generations as outdated, irrelevant, resistant to change, and incapable of understanding today’s reality.

Once those conclusions are made, genuine listening disappears. And our culture, it reinforces those judgments every day until they feel like facts.

When listening stops, learning stops. Understanding stops. Wisdom stops.

Which is unfortunate because each generation possesses something the other desperately needs.

Young people bring energy, imagination, innovation, and the courage to challenge outdated assumptions.

Elders bring perspective, pattern recognition, and lessons forged through success, failure, heartbreak, disappointment, recovery, and time.

One generation knows what is emerging.

The other knows what endures.

Humanity needs both.

Yet many Elder initiatives assume that simply putting younger and older people in the same room will naturally lead to wisdom transfer.

It doesn’t.

Not if ageism is sitting in the room. And it’s always sitting in the room.

Not if one person is speaking while the other is silently preparing a rebuttal.

Not if the listener has already decided there is nothing worth hearing.

The first task of intergenerational communication is not speaking.

The first task is creating a listening that makes a difference.

People do not hear what is said. They hear what their listening allows.

Listening is not passive. It is an active filter shaped by assumptions, fears, identities, beliefs, and past experiences.

Long before words arrive, the listener has already decided what is believable, possible, or worth paying attention to.

If you want your words to matter, don’t begin by speaking.

Begin by creating a listening environment that makes what you are about to say able to be heard.

Otherwise, you are simply making noise that bounces off an already occupied mind.

The quality of what is heard depends much less on the brilliance of the speaker than on the openness of the listener.

Change listening, and the very same words can alter a life.

An Elder understands and practices generating a listening where wisdom can be heard.

Rather than convincing, persuading, or dispensing advice, an Elder first creates a listening in which people are open to hearing wisdom.

Presence precedes words.

Trust precedes insight.

Safety precedes transformation.

That is the Elder’s work.

When listening shifts, everything shifts.

What was dismissed becomes obvious.

What once seemed impossible becomes possible.

A conversation that was going nowhere suddenly opens a future that neither person could have imagined.

The greatest impact an Elder can offer is not better answers.

The greatest impact an Elder can provide is to generate a listening in which wisdom can be heard, where the wisdom goes deep, and where the wisdom touches the listener’s inner being.

Elders have unlocked the secrets of listening:

• Listening is more powerful than speaking.

• Speaking is the listening spoken.

• To alter what is heard, alter the listener’s context.

• It’s an Elder’s presence that creates listening before the words arrive.

Why the Future Needs Elders.

If you look around, it’s difficult to argue that humanity suffers from a shortage of experts. We now have experts in every domain. Check your Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, YouTube, Facebook, and yes, even Substack. Or just ask your AI.

Experts everywhere. Expertise anytime.

We have experts in economics.

Experts in politics.

Experts in medicine.

Experts in education.

Experts in artificial intelligence.

Experts in social media.

Experts in nutrition.

Experts on what it takes to be an expert.

Expertise is not the problem. It is abundant and on demand.

In fact, we are experiencing the greatest concentration of specialized knowledge in human history.

And yet here we are.

More divided.

More anxious.

More polarized.

More reactive.

More uncertain about the future.

Something isn’t adding up.

The assumption has been that if we could simply gather enough expertise, we could solve our biggest problems.

But what if any of our biggest problems are not failures of expertise?

What if they are failures of wisdom?

Experts solve problems inside a system.

Elders question whether the system itself is producing the problems.

That’s a very different conversation.

An expert asks:

“How do we make this machine run faster?”

An Elder asks:

“Where exactly is this machine taking us?”

An expert improves efficiency.

An Elder examines consequences.

An expert specializes.

An Elder integrates.

An expert often sees the part.

An Elder works to see the whole.

The future is certainly not suffering because of a shortage of experts.

It is suffering from a shortage of people capable of stepping back far enough to recognize patterns, understand consequences, restrain power, and think beyond the next quarter, election cycle, news cycle, or social media post.

In other words, an Elder.

Today, we possess extraordinary power.

Technology can influence elections.

Algorithms can shape behavior.

Artificial intelligence can alter entire industries.

Financial systems can affect the lives of billions of people with a few keystrokes.

The problem is not power.

The problem is that wisdom lags far behind power.

History has repeatedly shown that when power grows faster than wisdom, things eventually go sideways. Sometimes dramatically sideways.

The Roman Empire had experts.

So did Enron.

Enough said.

Wisdom asks questions that expertise alone cannot answer.

What are the unintended consequences?

Who benefits?

Who pays the price?

What happens seven generations from now?

What are we becoming while pursuing what we want?

These are Elder questions.

And frankly, they are questions that are increasingly absent from our public, political, and business conversations and their decision-making.

An Elder is someone who has transformed experience into perspective, perspective into discernment, and discernment into responsibility.

An Elder understands that every decision creates consequences beyond the moment.

An Elder naturally includes future generations in their thinking.

An Elder recognizes that winning the argument may not be as important as preserving the relationship.

An Elder knows that being right and being wise are two very different things.

The emerging role of the Elder is not a personal lifestyle option.

I believe it is becoming an absolute societal necessity.

Because the challenges we face today are no longer merely technical.

They are human.

They are ethical.

They are civilizational.

And they require something that expertise alone cannot provide.

The future will certainly need scientists, engineers, physicians, entrepreneurs, economists, and technologists.

But if humanity is going to successfully navigate the decades ahead, it will need something more.

It will need people who can see the whole picture.

People capable of thinking long-term.

People capable of asking not only what can be done, but what should be done.

In other words, it will need Elders.

Not because they know more.

Because they see more.

BECOMING NOBODY

One gift of being an Elder is that most things don’t get stuck for very long.

Anger. Resentment. Hurt feelings. Unspoken communications. These things certainly occur. They are part of being human. They come with the package.

The difference is not that Elders don’t get triggered.

The difference is that they don’t stay triggered. At least, most of the time.

Let’s not get carried away and make Elders into saints. As an Elder, I sometimes fall into a deep hole, pull up a chair, and spend a few days there.

Life happens. Heartbreak. Loss. Failure. Disappointment. Illness. Rejection. Life comes with unavoidable consequences.

And, thankfully, the other side happens too.

Love. Friendship. Purpose. Success. Joy.

Though I’ve noticed something curious. The unpleasant experiences never stay as long as we want them to leave, and the pleasant experiences never stay as long as we want them to remain.

Elders have the same things happen to them as everybody else. They are just able to respond differently.

THE PROJECT OF BECOMING SOMEBODY

I grew up in a family and culture where becoming a somebody was the primary assignment.

Get good grades.

Get a respected career.

Become successful.

Make something of yourself.

In short, become a somebody.

And I did.

I became a respected professional. I achieved. I accumulated. I accomplished. I gathered titles, credentials, and recognition.

Man, was I a somebody, but that somebody wasn’t free. I was entrapped in this somebody incarnation.

The problem was that when your identity is built around being somebody, portions of life become threatening.

Because a somebody is an object.

And objects exist in a world of forces.

They are evaluated, compared, judged, rewarded, rejected, elevated, and diminished.

As long as your identity is organized around being somebody, life will feel like something happening to you rather than through you.

Promoted.

Demoted.

Praised.

Ignored.

Included.

Excluded.

As a somebody, life is always doing it to you.

Sometimes in large waves.

Sometimes in irritating little ripples.

But always to you.

I mean by “to” that you are the object of events. Things are acting upon you. You’re being affected, pushed, bumped, rewarded, punished, praised, or criticized.

When you are the object, this somebody, you’re a pinball at the top of the game, being ricocheted around by the bumpers with no control. And loss of control breeds fear, frustration, and helplessness.

THE ELDER SHIFT

Elders work to become a nobody.

Not invisible.

Not insignificant.

Not passive.

A nobody in the sense that Elders are no longer organizing life around protecting, defending, proving, promoting, or preserving an identity.

The Elder’s magic wand isn’t that bad things stop happening.

They don’t.

The magic wand is that fewer and fewer things and their aftermath don’t stick around.

Joy moves through them.

Sorrow moves through them.

Success moves through them.

Failure moves through them.

Praise moves through them.

Criticism moves through them.

Life moves through them.

“Through” implies participating in, processing, and allowing experience to move through your awareness without getting stuck.

As an Elder, there is much less “somebody” to get hooked on.

Less defending.

Less proving.

Less needing life to go a particular way.

When life is organized around being a somebody, everything feels personal.

When life is allowed to move through you, everything becomes experience.

Not an easy experience.

Not always a welcome experience.

But experience, nonetheless.

And because of that, Elders become lighter.

More available.

More present.

Less concerned with being a somebody.

More committed to being a human being through whom life is unfolding.

That is the Elder’s greatest magic wand.

Abra-Cadabra – I’m nobody.

Life never stops happening. But eventually it stops happening to you. And begins happening through you.”

A WAKE-UP CALL

IT’S GOING TO HIT THE FAN

Are Americans getting too old?

Some people think so. And that “some” is quickly becoming “many.”

A growing number of writers and commentators argue that older adults have accumulated too much wealth, influence, and power. They claim America’s future is increasingly being shaped by people looking backward rather than forward.

The argument goes something like this:

Older people are living longer.

They’re staying in leadership positions longer.

They’re holding onto their wealth longer.

And because there are so many more of them than ever before, they’re exerting an outsized influence on the direction of the country.

In short, America is becoming a gerontocracy, a society run by old people.

Well, that’s one way to look at it.

But I think something else is going on, and we Elders need to understand it.

People are certainly living longer. More than 9,000 Americans turn sixty-five every day. For the first time in human history, we have a massive population living into later life.

Before the culture starts blaming old people for everything from politics to the price of eggs, let’s take a closer look.

Because age is not the problem.

Wealth may be.

People over sixty-five hold about 45 percent of our nation’s wealth. Sounds alarming until you look closer. In 2019, 70% of that wealth (45%) was held by just 10% of seniors.

The issue isn’t old people.

The issue is people with wealth.

Your grandmother is probably not sitting on a mountain of cash, plotting the future of America from her recliner.

A relatively small group of wealthy people holds most of the wealth, and some of them are old.

But here’s the real issue.

Whenever large disparities exist, people look for someone to blame.

That’s true with race.

It’s true with religion.

And in this case, it’s especially true with age.

The wider the gap between the haves and the have-nots, the easier it becomes to create an enemy.

Old versus young.

Boomers versus Millennials.

Retirees versus workers.

The real issue may be disparity, but age becomes the visible target of frustration. That’s how ageism will grow.

SO, WHAT CAN ELDERS DO ABOUT IT?

First, stop defending age and start embodying wisdom.

The younger generations are not impressed that we have managed to stay alive for seventy-five or eighty years.

Longevity is an accomplishment of biology and ecology.

Elderhood is an accomplishment of development.

For the first time in human history, millions of people are living long enough to become Elders.

Not older.

Elders.

People who can think beyond their own interests.

People who can see beyond the next election, the next quarter, or the next social media outrage.

People who understand that every generation inherits the future from the generation before it.

A wealthy older person asks, “How do I keep what I have?”

An Elder asks, “What am I responsible for passing forward?”

This is where Elders can lead.

Not by holding onto power.

Not by occupying positions forever.

Not by insisting they know better.

But by becoming bridge-builders between generations.

Mentors instead of gatekeepers.

Stewards instead of owners.

Contributors instead of competitors.

The future doesn’t need old people running everything.

Nor does it need young people to run everything.

The future needs wisdom at the table.

So to my fellow Elder teachers, leaders, and practitioners: we have work to do.

The alarm is ringing. Time to get up and get to work. The opportunity is sitting right in front of us.

Let’s not waste it.

THE NOW UNSTOPPABLE ELDER MOVEMENT

A movement becomes unstoppable when it reaches a tipping point—when enough people, organizations, conversations, and shared purpose converge that the movement no longer depends on any one individual. It begins carrying itself.

I believe the Elder Movement has crossed that threshold.

The Godfathers, Zalman, Ron, and Chip, have become emeritus. The trail has been blazed. Many footsteps have now made the ragged trail into a well-trodden path.

The tracks of pioneers have become the Camino del Anciano, the path of the Elder, now traversed by many “pilgrims.” A pilgrim being someone who undertakes a journey—not merely to reach a destination, but to be transformed by the journey itself.

For decades, scattered voices around the world have been quietly asking a different question:

What does it mean to become an Elder, not simply grow old?

Those voices were once isolated.

Today, they are becoming a chorus.

Thousands of organizations, conferences, podcasts, books, workshops, retreats, research projects, and online communities are exploring conscious aging, Eldering, Sage-ing, wisdom, purpose, legacy, spirituality, intergenerational leadership, and the unique contribution older adults can make to humanity.

Each effort may appear independent.

They are not.

They are expressions of something much larger emerging beneath the surface.

History reminds us that every significant shift begins this way. Individual sparks appear unrelated until, suddenly, they reveal themselves to be part of the same fire.

The Elder Movement is no longer just about extending lifespan and improving physical and mental healthspan.

It has also become about expanding and extending wisdom. Wisdom, a powerful element missing in our world.

No previous generation has had this opportunity.

The Elder movement is about bringing wisdom much more fully into the world.

Never before have so many human beings lived long enough, remained healthy enough, and possessed enough accumulated experience to consciously become Elders.

This is entirely new territory for humanity.

The question is no longer whether we will have millions of older people.

That demographic reality is already there.

The question is whether millions of these older people will simply age...

...or become Elders. The Elder model for growing old is now available and well tested.

An Elder is not defined by wrinkles, retirement, or years lived.

An Elder is recognized by presence.

Presence is the quiet power of an Elder’s way of being, changing the people and environment around them before a single word is spoken.

They steady the environment.

They think beyond themselves.

They calm conflict rather than fuel it.

They bring perspective where others bring reaction.

They carry wisdom earned through living.

Perhaps most exciting is that no one owns this movement.

There is no headquarters.

No central authority.

No single organization.

And me, I am just one of many on the Camino.

Modern Elder Academy. Sage-ing International. Contemporary Elder Institute. Center for Conscious Eldering. Elders Action Network. Hundreds—perhaps thousands—of other organizations around the globe are each contributing different pieces of this same emerging future.

Together, they are creating something none could create alone.

Humanity has spent centuries developing knowledge.

The last century developed technology.

Perhaps this century will be known as the one in which humanity finally develops wisdom.

That is why I believe the Elder Movement is now unstoppable.

Not because it has become large enough.

But because it has become necessary.

The world has no shortage of information.

It has no shortage of intelligence.

It has no shortage of power.

It has no shortage of wealth.

Check the current field you’re living into. The existing field has a lot to do with how you feel about yourself and about life.

What the field lacks, and desperately needs, is wisdom.

And that is precisely what Elders are here to bring.

The movement is already underway.

People don’t hear wisdom because it is spoken. They hear it because something within them already knows it is true.

Our growing readership demonstrates this “knowing.” It hits home at this time of their lives.

ELDER, FROM POSSIBILITY TO PROBABILITY

A possibility is something that can happen.
A probability is something that is likely to happen.

A possibility exists in imagination, vision, concept, or declaration.
A probability exists in structure, momentum, evidence, and action.

A possibility says:

“This could exist.”

A probability says:

“Given the current circumstances, this will likely occur.”

That distinction matters enormously.

Most people die with possibilities.
Very few build probabilities.

Here’s the deeper part:

A possibility does not require proof.
A probability does.

A possibility can appear instantly.
A probability is built over time.

A possibility is fragile.
A probability has weight.

Think about flight.
For thousands of years, human flight was a possibility.
Then structure appeared:

• engineering,

• mathematics,

• propulsion,

• experimentation,

• repeated demonstration.

At some point, flight stopped being a dream and became inevitable.

That’s the movement from possibility → probability.

So how does that transition happen?

My observation is that possibility → probability usually undergoes five proceedings:

1. Language

Someone distinguished a new reality. They distinguish something in the background and move it into the foreground. In the background, it had existed indistinctly, then it was brought into the foreground, where it became distinguished, identified, and recognized.

This distinction has now been made. Before the distinction, there was no difference between “Elder” and “older, people only had “older.”

The new distinctions create new perception and understanding.

2. Embodiment

Someone lives it visibly.

People must encounter human proof.
Not theory.
Presence.

An Elder has to occur in the world.

There are now enough of us Elders occurring in the country to support the “label” of Elder.

3. Structure

The possibility gets organized into repeatable forms. The following list of elements are now established.

Elder Organizations

Elder Conferences

Elder Podcasts

Social Networks

Elder Programs.
Elder Communities.
Books on Being an Elder.
Elder Practices.

Without structure, possibilities evaporate. With structure, it turns into probability.

4. Social Proof

Others begin participating.

At the moment, multiple organizations, communities, podcasts, publications, and networks are delivering Elder development out of the same context and in the same direction.

The culture starts saying:

“Something is happening here.”

My AI estimates:

200,000–500,000 Americans are actively involved in conscious aging or Elder-development work.

10,000–50,000 are functioning as recognizable Elders whose identity and way of being have fundamentally shifted.

10–15 million Americans are likely “Elder-capable”—people over 65 who are searching for a life beyond retirement, consumption, and decline.

5. Momentum

The idea starts reproducing beyond the founders.

That is critical.

The moment a conversation no longer depends on a single person, it enters the realm of probability.

It is not merely attention.
It is a structural movement.

The possibility, now a probability, means it is realizable. Not “pie in the sky,” but “pie on the table.” Elder is now understood as another stage of development.

Elder as a probability is now exists.

A possibility is a spark.

A probability is a fire.

A possibility says, “Maybe.”

A probability says, “We’re already underway.”

For most of human history, Elder existed only as a possibility. An occasional wise man. An occasional wise woman. A rare exception.

Today, something different is occurring.

The language exists.
The people exist.
The organizations exist.
The books exist.
The conferences exist.
The communities exist.
The practices exist.
The momentum exists.

Most importantly, the need exists.

At a time when the culture is drowning in information and starving for wisdom, the emergence of Elder is no longer a romantic idea or spiritual aspiration.

It is becoming a social necessity.

The real question is no longer whether Elders will emerge.

The question is whether enough of us will emerge soon enough.

Because the future does not merely need older people.

It needs people capable of bringing perspective where there is panic, discernment where there is noise, responsibility where there is blame, and wisdom where there is power.

That is the work before us.

Not someday.

Now.

The possibility has spoken.

The probability has entered the room.

And once a probability reaches critical mass, culture changes.

Same age.

Different life.

Different future.

THE AGEISM TRAP

The Aging Workforce Is Exposing a Much Bigger Problem

What’s important today isn’t simply how many people are working. It’s who is working—and how old they are.

Numerous reports show America’s workforce is getting older. Financial pressure, longer life expectancy, and inadequate retirement savings are keeping people on the job longer than previous generations.

Today, nearly one-fourth of the workforce—24.5 percent—is age 55 or older. That’s the fastest-growing segment of the labor force.

But I think something else is happening that few people are talking about.

The longer older adults remain in jobs, the more ageism may actually be increasing.

Not because older workers are doing nothing wrong.

Because younger workers are trying to move up the ladder at the same time.

Titles. Promotions. Income. Influence.

Only so many seats at the table.

As the gap widens, the language changes.

It becomes us versus them.

And ageism grows.

THE REAL PROBLEM

The problem isn’t older people.

The problem is that our culture only knows how to value people through the lens of work.

Think about it.

In America, your worth is measured by productivity.

Can you still perform?

Can you still compete?

Can you still keep up?

Can you still produce?

Older adults find themselves trapped in a game that gets harder every year.

They must continually prove they are still useful.

Still employable.

Still relevant.

Still worth keeping around.

The conversation becomes:

“Can they still do the job?”

Instead of:

“What unique contribution does age make possible?”

That’s a very different question.

As more older adults remain identified primarily as workers, society becomes even more conditioned to judge them by younger standards:

• Speed

• Adaptability

• Technological fluency

• Productivity

• Competitiveness

Good luck with that.

No matter how capable you are, there is always a 32-year-old who knows the software update before breakfast.

And eventually, a 22-year-old who doesn’t understand why you printed anything.

The deeper issue is that our culture never developed a meaningful role beyond worker.

It developed the employee.

It developed the retiree.

It even developed “senior citizen,” whatever that means.

But it never developed Elder.

Retirement was never a particularly satisfying answer.

Neither is endless employment.

Both models share the same assumption:

A person’s value is tied primarily to what they produce.

WHAT WE’RE MISSING

Yet many of the qualities most needed in a complex civilization emerge later in life:

• Perspective

• Discernment

• Restraint

• Pattern recognition

• Long-view thinking

• The ability to steady an environment rather than inflame it

• Wisdom

Unfortunately, wisdom is terrible at marketing itself.

It doesn’t fit neatly into a spreadsheet.

It doesn’t show up in quarterly earnings.

It doesn’t generate exciting headlines.

And because of that, culture consistently overlooks both wisdom and the value wisdom delivers.

In a strange way, the longer older adults remain defined primarily as workers, the longer society delays the emergence of Elders.

Fortunately, that story is beginning to change.

Over the last few decades, a growing community of Elder developers, organizations, and practitioners, of which I am one, have begun knocking holes in the cultural narrative.

The castle walls are cracking.

The conversation is changing.

The question is not whether people should work at 70, 80, or even 90.

Many should.

Many want to.

Many have much to contribute.

The real question is whether work is the highest expression of late life.

My colleagues think not.

A civilization that only knows how to use its older population as labor is still trapped in ageism.

A civilization that learns how to access the wisdom of its Elders has taken a very different step.

One asks:

“Can you still produce?”

The other asks:

“What do you now see that the rest of us cannot?”

Growing old is inevitable.

Becoming an Elder is a choice.

WISDOM IN THE WORLD

Following Legacy

It’s become evident that expanding Elder wisdom worldwide would make a profound difference in having the world work.

Look at the deleterious decisions politicians—and we, the people—are making. Look at the conditions under which these decisions are being made. Not a drop of wisdom in sight.

What I see is that we’ve mistaken access to information for wisdom. Information alone doesn’t steady people, clarify judgment, or help us live responsibly. Quite the opposite. It often leaves us confused, reactive, and overwhelmed.

Without wisdom, information becomes quicksand.

The more we consume, the more we become stuck.

I’m talking about wisdom, not knowledge.

Wisdom is the ability to see clearly what matters, what doesn’t, and what the consequences of our actions will be over time.

Wisdom is knowledge tempered by experience, discernment, humility, and responsibility.

The mission—and now the mission of my colleagues—is simple:

Get Elder wisdom to the tables where decisions about the future are made.

• wisdom in politics
• wisdom in business
• wisdom in technology
• wisdom in how we raise children
• wisdom in how we care for one another
• wisdom in how we organize society itself

Right now, many of our biggest decisions are driven by speed, power, profit, outrage, polling numbers, algorithms, and whoever can yell the loudest on cable television.

How’s that working out?

Wisdom brings something radically different:

• long-view thinking
• discernment
• restraint
• perspective
• the ability to steady the environment rather than inflame it

Not older people reminiscing about the good old days.

Not retirees battling for pickleball supremacy.

Not seniors talking about their maladies and which doctors they are seeing.

I’m talking about the emergence of actual Elders as a stabilizing force in the culture.

And frankly, I feel a sense of urgency.

We may be entering a period in human history where wisdom is no longer a luxury.

Wisdom may become a survival skill.

SO, WHAT’S THE STRATEGY?

Honestly, at 81, I’ve become suspicious of grand strategies.

I’ve lived through enough “movements,” “transformations,” and “next big things” to know that most end up as conference brochures, coffee mugs, or TikTok videos.

But this feels different.

Why?

Because nobody is really in charge.

No headquarters.

No central committee.

No Elder Pope.

Just thousands of people arriving at roughly the same conclusion:

“There has to be more to aging than trying not to age.”

When I look around, I see numerous Elder organizations, Elder conferences, podcasts, communities, retreats, books, Substacks, and thousands of online conversations happening.

Most of us don’t know each other.

Yet we’re talking about many of the same things:

· Purpose.

· Mortality.

· Responsibility.

· Wisdom.

· What are our lives now for?

That got my attention.

Maybe the job isn’t to create another organization.

God knows we have enough organizations.

Maybe the job is simply to recognize one another.

To amplify one another.

To stop acting like isolated pioneers and start acting like fellow travelers.

If enough of us do that, something powerful will happen.

The culture will see us.

Not as old people.

Not as retirees.

As Elders.

And once a culture can see something, it can no longer ignore it.

That’s how change happens.

Slowly.

Then suddenly.

A conversation becomes a movement.

A movement becomes a force.

And a force changes what is possible.

From where I sit, wisdom in the world is no longer a nice idea.

It’s becoming a necessity.

Nelson Mandela saw what was possible and sourced a cluster of global leaders who were established and recognized Elders.

A few years later, in our country, the Elder movement was initiated by Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi, Ron Pevny, Harry R. Moody, Connie Zweig, Richard Leider, and Bill Thomas.

Subsequently, Elder was expanded through organizations such as Sage-ing International and the Center for Conscious Eldering.

Then, Chip Conley’s Modern Elder Academy took Elder mainstream. And me, the Contemporary Elder Institute, followed in their wake.

The distinction Elder is now seeping into the cultural narrative. Organizational structures are in place to hold Elder in place and expand its breadth and volume.

THE WISDOM DEFICIT

Why More Information Is Making Us Less Wise

The world has solved the problem of access to information. Anything you need to know, you can know.

Unfortunately, it may have created a crisis of judgment in the process.

Think about it.

At no time in human history have people had access to more information.

More data.

More experts.

More technology.

More podcasts.

More videos.

More newsletters.

More opinions.

More people absolutely certain they know what they’re talking about.

And yet…

We also have more polarization.

More anxiety.

More confusion.

More outrage.

More short-term thinking.

More people yelling at one another from opposite sides of digital fences.

Something isn’t adding up.

The assumption has always been that if people simply had more information, better decisions would naturally follow.

Come on, now. How’s that working out?

The problem is that we’ve confused information with wisdom.

They are not the same thing.

Not even close.

Knowledge tells us what can be done.

Wisdom tells us what should be done.

Knowledge gave us social media.

Wisdom would have asked what social media might do to attention, relationships, children, and democracy before releasing it into the wild.

Knowledge gave us artificial intelligence.

Wisdom asks what kind of human beings we need to become as we create machines that can outthink us in every domain.

Knowledge creates power.

Wisdom governs power.

Knowledge accelerates.

Wisdom steers.

Knowledge asks, “Can we?”

Wisdom asks, “Should we?”

And right now, humanity appears to be developing knowledge much faster than it is developing wisdom.

That’s not a small problem.

That’s a civilization-level problem.

Most of our institutions are designed to reward speed.

Wisdom moves slower.

Business rewards growth.

Wisdom asks, “Growth toward what?”

Politics rewards certainty.

Wisdom is comfortable saying, “I don’t know.”

Social media rewards reaction.

Wisdom pauses.

Sometimes wisdom waits.

Which is probably why wisdom would never survive as an influencer.

Imagine the post:

“Before reacting, consider multiple perspectives, reflect on long-term consequences, and proceed with humility.”

Three likes.

Two comments.

Four unsubscribes.

Yet wisdom is precisely what is missing at many of the tables where decisions about the future are being made.

Wisdom sees beyond immediate gain.

Wisdom considers consequences.

Wisdom includes future generations in today’s decisions.

Wisdom asks not only what benefits me, but what benefits the larger whole.

That is why Elders have become essential.

Not because older people automatically become wise.

Trust me, age alone doesn’t do that.

I’ve met people who have been 17 for 70 years.

An Elder is something different.

An Elder is someone who has converted experience into perspective, perspective into discernment, and discernment into responsible action.

The future doesn’t need fewer experts.

It doesn’t need less information.

It certainly isn’t getting less technology.

What it desperately needs is wisdom.

Wisdom in business.

Wisdom in government.

Wisdom in education.

Wisdom in technology.

Wisdom at the table before decisions become consequences.

Because information can tell us almost anything.

Wisdom tells us what matters.

And that may be the most important conversation of our time.
